“Great location, compact room”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 10, 2007

We stayed here for 5 nights when the weather was terrible so unfortunately were unable to make the most of the breathtakingly beautiful beach which the hotel overlooks. We had an ocean view room so could still enjoy looking at the view and if the weather had been better the balcony with table and 2 chairs would have been great to sit on.

There seem to be several grades of room and ours was very compact despite being pretty expensive. If you sat at the desk/dressing table and somebody opened the dooor from the corridor they would hit the chair you were sitting on! The bed was only a standard double i.e. 4' 6'' which I haven't come across in any other expensive hotels but a larger bed would have meant no room for bedside tables.

The room didn't have air conditioning either which might be a problem in hot weather. The decor was attractive and contemporary and the bathroom was a good size although the bathroom lighting wasn't good enough for my husband to see to shave in the evening.

The hospitality tray with tea, coffee, hot chocolate, biscuits etc was a good point and it was kept topped up with fresh supplies twice a day by the friendly maids who also kept the room spotless and did the turndown service in the evening.

Breakfast was good, although we sometimes had to ask for coffee/toast twice before we got it. We tried the Brasserie and enjoyed the food there but after being greedy with cream teas and not feeling that hungry in the evening we also went to Pizza Exzpress and a chinese restaurant which are a few minutes walk away.

The public areas were all decorated in an attractive contemporary style, and there was free internet access from a computer in one of the lounges. The only parts of the hotel still looking in need of TLC were the corridors which I guess don't matter so much, but they could really do with nice new doors for all the rooms as they can be hard to close properly and do look tacky.

There's a bus stop right outside the hotel and we got the bus into St Helier twice and then hired a car to see the rest of the island - this was organised for us by the concierge who, like the rest of the staff, was friendly and helpful.

Couldn't fault this hotel right on the sea front St Brelade. Service was very good, toast just turns up at breakfast. Everything you want is available - 24 hour room service. Very nice refurbished modern rooms and air conditioning excellent in the heat of the Bank Holiday weekend. Ocean View rooms are lovely overlooking a great beach - sea safe and quite warm to swim in. Life Guard on the beach and plenty of umbrellas, sunbeds to hire, kayaking and small boats for hire. Not too many people on the beach plenty of space. Lovely Terrace restaurant in the hotel, great menu, well prepared food and watching the sun go down over the sea just lovely. Very attentive service from all staff in the hotel - they listen to your requests and get it right. Comfortable beds. A lovely holiday break flying Flybe from Heathrow.

The L'Horizon is a fabulous hotel right on the beach at St Brelade's Bay. We had a wonderful deluxe room with a balcony sea view. There was also a sitting room with another smaller TV. The food is always excellent and the staff are brilliant and cannot do enough for you. I would highly recommend a stay at L'Horizon!

The rooms are pleasant and the service is good.

The restaurants (all of them) need to up the standard. Too often paying top prices for very average food. Good attention to presentation detail does not mask the use of inferior quality ingredients.

Wonderful view and overall an enjoyable stay.

We stayed at L'Horizon for 3 nights recently, we arrived at 2.25 to find our room wasn't ready although you can check in from 2pm. The girl on reception said it shouldn't be any longer than 10 mins so we hung around the lobby with our luggage. After 20 mins we went and asked again, the girl looked a bit surprised and gave us the key straightaway, she hadn't come looking for us and we think she'd forgotten we were waiting.

Got to room, weird that with them spending a lot of money on a refurb
that they still had keys to the rooms, ours didn't always work, we would be fiddling about for ages trying to get in on occasion.

Room OK, although small. Unfortunately as we'd booked through lastminute.com we got a room at the back of the hotel, although I had requested a sea view when we arrived and was happy to pay the extra, they were fully booked (?), our room looked out on to the carpark. Definitely get a room with a view, the beach is just beautiful, well worth the extra price, I believe all the sea view rooms have a balcony.

We then went down for afternoon tea after reading on here how filling
it was. We sat in the lounge looking out to the beach, service was OK, although as usual, the staff are mostly Eastern Europeans so English is not their first language. We were really disappointed with
the afternoon tea, they didn't have a choice of tea, only floral ones, no Earl Grey, Assam etc, which I was surprised at as they're supposed to be a 4 star hotel with a nice afternoon tea. Sandwiches OK but the cakes and scones were awful! Completely tasteless and the scones were so doughy we couldn't eat them! We did say if that's what afternoon tea is like what's the rest of the food like! Not a great start.

Unfortunately the first night I didn't sleep at all, the bed and pillows were so hard! Maybe we've been spoilt as last time we went to Jersey we stayed at The Club Hotel & Spa and their bedding was amazing, fluffy pillows, high thread count sheets, infact I had the best nights sleep I've ever had in a hotel at The Spa. If L'Horizon had spent a bit of money on their beds and bedding then it would have made a big difference.

We chose to have breakfast in the room for our 3 mornings, service was always on time, although twice some items were left off the order, but phoning down soon bought the missing items up to us. Breakfast was very tasty and it was nice to have a big plasma screen TV in room.

Overall, L'Horizon just needs a few tweaks, better bedding ie Egyptian cotton and feather pillows would be nice. The hairdryer was a nightmare, one of those that you have to keep your finger pressed down on to make it work, which if you've got long hair like me, takes forever and gives you arm ache keeping the button pressed in. The towels/robes, although white were not soft and fluffy but quite stiff, a bit of fabric conditioner would have sorted that, not a major expense for them.

The best thing about this place is the location, we think it was the prettiest beach on Jersey and the breakfast was nice, although when we go back we'll probably try The Spa again, not L'Horizon.

We stayed there for Easter 2007, seeking a nice relaxing week end and planning to pamper ourselves in the spa.

The hotel is located just on the beach - which is fantastic. We had a deluxe room which was just great: clean, modern sober furniture with a fantastic view on the beach and a good size balcony.

We hate a couple of times in their restaurant - where the food was very good and different. The chef innovates and all his meals are a delight. Pity about the service which is just so slow - the staff is clearly over-worked and cannot cope - despite trying hard. The same at breakfast - a good buffet but we had to ask 3 times to get coffee and waited about 30 minutes for poached eggs. Again - same staff than at dinner - you wonder if they get some time to sleep. And only a handful of them for a huge breakfast room. It is quite disappointing for such a quality hotel!

Unfortunately we could not get in the spa as it was full for the next 4 days. This was a big disappointment for us as we specifically picked the hotel for the spa. We asked the reception if they could so something but they could not and advised us that we should have booked in advance prior to our arrival. Pity no one told us this before and it is also not written on the hotel web site - where we booked our stay. Once we overcame the disappointment of the spa - we enjoyed the rooms, hotel reception and outside areas for lunch and the beautiful views on the beach.

Overall a good stay despite some small problems .... it is an expensive hotel and still can improve for the price they charge

Booked a four night break in late April having been to Jersey a few times before but stayed elsewhere. Some islanders living in London rated it highly having been to weddings there and we were not disappointed by the brilliant views overlooking the bay. A sea view is a must. Very friendly staff and very helpful. Busy hotel with functions (fashion show, wedding and funeral wake)but did not matter. Smallish bedrooms but modern and massive plasma on wall. Attentive housekeeping - room always inspected by housekeeper after cleaning. Dining room first night was almost empty whilst bistrot full and a bit chaotic. Both menus seemed slightly limited and pricey for what was on offer, but not all would agree. Ended up eating out for the other three nights but our choice. Breakfast was good and could last you the day. Large pool which was fine and fairly quiet. Would thoroughly recommend for location (sea views) and great place for a short break.. Would definitely stay again, but not with full board. Found the reviews very useful and generally fair. Worth checking your room type/location before confirming.
