“Peaceful location, excellent breakfast.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 22, 2006

Rural location, very peaceful. We had a lovely large room, view and cup of tea on arrival. Very welcoming. Excellent breakfast and friendly owners. Away from the road and very easily found, good signposts. Ample parking. Comfy bed plus TV.

  • Liked — Beautiful big room.
  • Disliked — Wrong breakfast order taken, but quickly rectified and lovely, when it arrived
  • Tips/Secrets — Go to McMunns in Bally bUnnion for a lovely seaview and meal.

2 of 5 stars Reviewed October 19, 2006

We booked what we thought from the website, was a rather special bed and breakfast. There were advertisements about winning awards, so we had great expectations. The setting for the house is lovely and parking is ample. Once inside the lower floor was definitely a family home, with shoes and coats scattered around and the living room dusty, with a crushed can on the floor, a playstation lying on the floor and dirty, worn socks on the coffee table.
The owners were away and their very charming teenage son greeted us. Our room was satisfactory, but tiny. We had to leave the suitcase in the doorway and move it when we wanted to leave the room. The towels were very thin. When I went to bed the sheets were old and quite crumpled. There was a black hair on the bottom sheet. I spent the night wondering if the bed had been changed.
When we returned at the end of the next day, our room had not been serviced. Apparently we had locked the room, but we didn't know that we had to leave it unlocked to get it serviced.
At breakfast we had to use butter and jams from the other guests vacated table. We asked for breakfast to be served at 8.30am which was the latest that we could get it. In the end breakfast was served at 9am. It was a nicely cooked breakfast, but the places were not set. We basically scrounged around the dining room to get what we wanted ie plates, cutlery, butter, jam.
I assume that we were just unlucky to be there at the end of the week when the owners had been away, but we felt that as we were paying guests, that the service should have been better than it was.

My husband and I with our 3 children stayed at the O'Donovan's Knights Haven B & B in Glin/Tarbert for 2 nights on July 28 and 29, 05. Mr. John O'Donovan was pleasant to us but the promised items through his emails, such as bottled spring water in room and extensive breakfast menu did not materialized. On our second morning there, we were banished to the back room, right outside of our room and his daughter's room where they kept their ironing board and computer, to have breakfast. They had a set up of a table for 4 so a fifth folding chair was added. There wasn't any grapefruit juice nor were there any "house specialty freshly cooked porridge" as stated on their menu. We ordered French toast the first morning and they were barely 1/4" thick, which by North American standard were pretty thin. That also did not come with the promised mushrooms and tomatoes as stated on the "extensive" menu. The pancakes were fine but that did not come with anything else either. The second morning, I opted for the full Irish breakfast since the French toast did not fill me up but the rest of my family opted for the French toasts again. They were even thinner that morning, we were now down to a couple of 1/8" thick, roughly 2" x 3" size flat "crepe", still without the promised mushroom and tomatoes. Needless to say, my family came away from their breakfast table hungry.

The rooms weren't made up in between our stays, towels weren't replaced, beds not made. The shower door in our ensuite did not close properly. Mr. O'Donovan informed me that the family room we were in was built just earlier this year but it was certainly lacking. We had to walk through their private quarter through the kitchen to their dinning room for breakfast the first morning which I found "uncomfortable". The "luxurious sitting room for guests use" was messy with his children's toys unless he had another one hidden somewhere in his house? He claimed "Knights Haven was named Best Family Home in Ireland 2001 and received an Award of Excellence" so what had happened in the 4 years since? Our view was of their backyard and our other door was to the outside of the house which limited our interaction with the family. We never formally met Mrs. O'Donovan nor their children during our two day stay there. Which was fine as my family did not wish to spend any time in the home where we didn't feel particularly welcomed nor did we enjoy the usual Irish hospitality. The price of the stay was comparable to the others but we came away feeling disappointed.
