Went to Castle Oaks for a short family break with my wife and young children. Castle Oaks is a combination of hotel, standalone suites and holiday houses, set in rather nice grounds just east of Limerick. The experience was...mixed to say the least.

Starting with the bad, because unfortunately this was our first impression. We arrived early and decided to drop off our bags before heading off to explore the area. The reception staff were clearly unimpressed with this idea, when they finally got around to greeting us (after having their own little private conversation for five minutes about how hard they were working), we were told to bugger off and come back later, with a nice side order of condescension about how hotels work (my wife, with 20 years of travel industry experience was obviously unaware of this). After a few choice words, we were allocated our suite, and we left to explore.

The suites themselves are OK; like small houses with two upstairs bedrooms with ensuites, then a downstairs lounge and dining area. No kitchen facilities. All very clean and well-furnished, no real complaints although I don't think they really work ergonomically.

That evening we tried out the bar for dinner, and we saw the other side of the staff at Castle Oaks; the bar staff (the young barman in particular) couldn't have been more helpful and accomodating, and the food was very good. Breakfast the next morning was also good, and once again the staff were helpful, although the chef decided to remonstrate with one of the waitresses in front of all the guests for no reason I could see.

Later that day we tried the pool and leisure centre; its fine, although geared more for adults and older kids than our little ones, but once again the staff were nice and helpful.

On our final night we decided to order room service and make use of the dining area in the suite. Er...you can't actually order room service from a suite (although none of the guest literature actually tells you this, you only find out when you call the restaurant). You can order take away food from the bar menu, but you have to pick it up and take it back to your room yourself. I can kind of see why they've done this (to save on staff costs basically, and the suites are spread out over a large area) but its a bit rubbish, especially given the normal weather pattern for the west of Ireland (rain, with some added drizzle) and very poorly communicated.

Finally, my wife tried the beauty salon on our final day and they were brilliant, especially welcoming to our three year old daughter who insisted on having her nails done!

So, a bit of a mixed bag; nice location, some very nice staff, some really terrible ones, who are unfortunately front of house, and some weird rules.

Room Tip: Don't get a suite if you want use room service, stay in the main building.

Spectacular wedding reception at Castleoaks on 3rd August 2013, The Staff were extremely friendly and so efficient and helpful. The food was first class, the grounds for photos were absolutely stunning, the accommodation was excellent, and the function hall looked so elegant! A special word of Thanks to the Wedding Events manager Jamie, who we can not speak highly enough of for all his help and expertise on the day, a pleasure to deal with. I would highly recommend this hotel for a wedding,

Recently attended a wedding in the Castle Oaks and we had a fantastic stay and experience in the hotel. We don't normally write reviews but our experience was so good that I decided to take the time to write a review to recommend the Castle Oaks. The setting is perfect beside the river and nice and quiet, the food was more like a high quality restaurant standard and not the typical hotel standard. The interior of the ballroom is classy and loads of room to dance the night away.We love our food and were really impressed...would definitely go back there to eat.The staff were so helpful, pleasant and professional at all times and the standard of the hotel is top class. You get the feeling of the big old country home setting and definitely a 5 star experience and exceptional value. Our room was 'old world' style and so comfortable, clean and fresh.Breakfast the next morning was of the same standard with fresh fruit and freshly cooked food and plenty of it and delicious coffee that set us up for the rest of the day.No hesitation in recommending the Castle Oaks....go and try out the food and you'll be delighted.!!!

Lovely setting, close to Limerick city but quiet and peaceful. Would recommend the family suites or self catering apartments for any size family. Spacious bedrooms, clean and welcoming. Had our wedding reception at this Hotel 20 yrs ago and have been back several times since. Staff always friendly & welcoming. Highly recommended

Room Tip: Family or Garden Suite a must when travelling with small kids. 2 BR with adjoining livingroom and s...

My parents celebrated their 40th Wedding Anniversary in the Castle Oaks House Hotel in June. All the hotel staff were amazing, namely Jamie, the Banqueting Manager and Kathryn the Reservations Manager. The food served was outstanding as was the excellent service provided by the catering staff. The breakfast was indeed plentiful and again the serving staff were attentive and friendly. All members of our party stayed in the Garden Suites or in the Cottages. The accommodation is located in an idyllic setting and was perfectly suitable for all the adults and children with us. We had a wonderfully memorable weekend and would definitely recommend the Castle Oaks House Hotel.
