“Excellent family hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 23, 2014

We have just spent 5 lovely days at Tinakilly, such a fantastic location (close to Dublin and the lovely Wicklow) with fantastic views. A beautiful old house hotel keeping all the character of the period it was intended to be lived in!! Fabulous atmosphere with music and fireplaces burning in the back ground of each room.

We stayed with two children and are very conscious parents to not disturb other guests by our some times loud boys. But also wanting to sit and enjoy our evening meals. ALL the staff were so accommodating and understanding offering us to sit where ever we like to have our meals. Staff were also so so kind to our children our oldest even called it his ‘Hometel”

We will definitely be staying again - many thanks to all at Tinakilly for your hospitality.

Left work in Dublin at 4.30, was in Tinakilly by 6.
Guinness good, food excellent, accomadation a bit quirky, but clean and comfortable.
Great spot to chill out after a weeks work,
Accomadation was only €100 for the two of us for the night, not much more than getting a taxi in and back from town.

Never stayed at Tinakilly but had many enjoyable meals here over the years. Latest one was on Easter Saturday. Out on a drive in Wicklow we dropped into HUNTER'S HOTEL for lunch and were treated in the most unwelcoming fashion by an elderly, sour woman (proprietor? or just a grumpy waitress who has obviously neither manners nor training) with a surly "Have you booked" (the place was near empty), and then left us sitting in the drafty hallway, walking past a couple of times and entirely ignoring us, until (after 15mins) we got up and left. So, we travelled a couple of miles down the road to TINAKILLY HOUSE. The contrast with Hunter's could not have been more different: at Tinakilly, we were treated like valued guests, by staff who were friendly, welcoming and attentive. The food was good, the atmosphere warm and convivial, lovely grounds too.
If you're in the Ashford/Rathnew area, avoid Hunter's (or just go in to look at the pleasant gardens) and head to Tinakilly where the concept of customer service seems to be understood..

Had a memorable and beautiful stay at this splendid, clean and non-pretentious establishment. Our free bag of crisps after our first cuppa of the day made us feel that this was not a rip-off, even though we didn't pay much for a top notch deluxe 4 poster bed and very large room. The Argentinan red wine was far too easy to drink and went just perfectly with the Wicklow Lamb, which we felt a wee bit guilty eating after eying them up in Glendalough earlier on in the day. The only advice I want to give the management is the potholes and bumpy surface on the road leading up the house, but by no means would this stop us recommending this haven to other couples or for a significant anniversary or birthday dinner. Tinakilly has it all!

Room Tip: Room 31 gets my vote!

Dear Urbrowneyes,

Thank you for your review of Tinakilly and its wonderful to hear you enjoyed your stay with us.

We think its the small touches that make all the difference hence the bag of crisps !

Tomas chooses all our wines and the Argentinian red wine is one of our most popular and its perfect with the Wicklow Lamb which is all locally sourced.

I am pleased to inform you that the pot holes have been filled.

We appreciate the vote of confidence and please do recommend Tinakilly to all your friends we would love to see them and we will look after them very well.

Hope to see you back down soon.

Best regards
Catherine

After reading one or two recent negative reviews ( after we had booked ), I was wondering if we had made the right decision but thankfully we had. If your looking for a really warm and friendly welcome, atmosphere with great food and hospitality, the TH is for you. We only stayed 1 night but will go back for 2 the next time. It really has lovely old world charm, in a beautiful setting. What the staff may have lacked in experience was more than made up for in effort and enthusiasm.

Room Tip: Suggest you ask for a seaview room

Stayed here recently as a birthday treat. Rooms were lovely and spacious and had fabulous views of the Irish Sea. We could not fault the cleanliness of the rooms.

But unfortunately that's where the positives end. Service was very poor - badly trained and inexperienced staff running around but not very effective. The food was awful - overcooked, poor quality and overpriced!

I'm sorry to say we won't be back - regretful as we were do looking forward to our break here! What a shame! A great hotel in a superb location badly run!

Dear Helli_9

Thank you for your review of Tinakilly and I am pleased to hear you enjoyed your accommodation, our Suites are very large and have stunning views of the Irish Sea.

I am sorry to hear you found the service slow, like all hotels we do have trainees who are trained under the supervision of a manager. I am surprised you found the food was overcooked as we would have offered you an alternative choice. Our dinner menus are very competitively priced @ €33pp for a 3 course meal and we offer food in our Lounges where you can get a main course from €12pp. Our food is all locally sourced to ensure we offer freshness and high quality.

We hope you will return in the future.

Kindest regards
Catherine

just back from a stay at Tinakilly country house, we were attending a family occasion and first impressions were great, lovely old period house, we were given room number 11 the beagle, it was so small and resembled the servants quarters of old, you had to go into the bathroom and close the door just to use the sink, i asked if other rooms were available but the receptionist said no it was a standard deluxe double and they were full., this was puzzling as other members of our party also had standard double deluxe with 4 poster bed and jacuzzi bath? for the same price.
after coming back in the evening we felt clostrphobic so i asked again and a lovey girl on the desk upgraded us to a junior suite, great big room on ground floor.
after all that we were having dinner and this is where it was a let down, service was very slow, experianced staff trying to guide younger staff, a menu which does not offer a choice for anyone who does not like sauces and haute cuisine and prefer plain style food , i asked could i get something outside of the menu which was done, waiting time was quite long and dessert was lemon meirngue pie, this arrived in my opinion totally under cooked and un edible as it was runny not set, we expected more from a 4 star country house in such a lovely setting.

Dear Vitara00,

Thank you for your review during your stay in Tinakilly.

It was our pleasure to offer you a complimentary upgrade to one of our Junior Suites.
We always try to offer complimentary upgrades to our guests if we have Suites available.

Our extensive menus offer a wide range of choices for all tastes and we offer menus for guests who have special dietary requirements too. I am very pleased that we were able to serve you food not on the menu.

I am sorry you found the service a little slow but the restaurant was very busy that evening.

We do hope you will return in the future

Kindest regards
Catherine
