“Dissapointed Wedding Guest”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed September 3, 2007

Attended a family wedding at the BrookHall Brook lodge last week , and whilst wedding itself was well run and venue was great. We were extremely disappointed with the accomadation,as the rooms were booked by the Bride and Groom for family members I tried a number of times to get talking to the reservations dept to confirm that the room would be suitable for us ( we have a 6 and 2 year old) They were most unhelpful and we checked in ( you have to go to old part of hotel to do this as there is no Reception in Brook hall!!) they advised that the room would have a double single and a cot. We arrived in the room to discover no cot ( Luckily I had mine in the car just in case as they hadnt inspired confidence over the phone!) and the room was tiny!!!

This would all have been fair enough if we were stayin in a 2/3 star cheap as chips hotel but at the prices the Brook Lodge charge I was expecting something more. It was a nightmare to sleep in a room that size with four people and the bathroom wasnt much better. It all came across as a hurriedly finished room and as we were Wedding guests they obviously thought we wouldnt be seeing much of it! Pity they dont consider that every wedding guest is a future potential weekend breaker , but sorry Brook lodge you wont be seeing me again!!!

Similar to other reviews, we have stayed at Brook Lodge several times over the past couple of years. When it first opened we were very impressed with the atmosphere and the food. However over time the atmosphere changed and it was increasingly difficult to get a room due to weddings etc.

We thought when the new building was finished we would try it again and see if things had returned to normal. Unfortunately this was not the case. There used to be an excellent bar food menu in Actons, we tried the Orchard Cafe and the food was awful.

The room was shabby and the bathroom badly needed a revamp. The meal in the restaurant was overpriced to start with, but to add insult to injury there was an additional supplement for beef! One of the things I really loved about the Strawberry Tree was the organic veg - I had to ask for carrots and they were obviously microwaved.

Breakfast again was a real disappointment, with slow service and not real attention to detail, we were handed two halves of a torn menu and had to put the pieces together to figure out what was on offer.

We had planned to stay a second night however decided not to and moved on to a fantastic new hotel in Ballymoney which has now replaced Brook Lodge as a favourite romantic getaway.

We managed to secure 1 night on the Sunday of the bank holiday weekend for a quick break. We were allocated a room which was in the new building and had been furnished with pieces that were totally out of character and scattered about the roomlike an obstacle course. Dinner was good , though a tad overpriced at 60 euros a head. We were rushed through our courses and asked to take coffee outside so they could have another sitting at our table. We did so but found this at the price to be a bit Irish!!
We retired to the bar to get our coffees and had ordered a bottle of red wine to be sent from the restaurant, both failed to materialise!! We asked then about our coffees and wine and got the coffees thrown at us. 30 minutes later still no wine so we left the Bar. Back in the bedroom(of a 4 star Hotel) , a 4 foot sleigh bed for 2, 4 channel Tv, remote with no batteries, Tea and Coffee with no biscuits, No breakfast in Bed menu, No slip mat or protection in bathtub, Stained carpets,Noisy and no comment card. By 4 am both of us were still awake and wishing the morning to come quickly so we could leave.
On check in, I was asked if I would like a newspaper for the morning which i said yes. On check out they asked me if I had got my paper, which I hadn't. They then gave me one and "oh, Just one minute until I add that to your Bill" In all my years of travelling and staying with Mandarin oriental, leading hotels of the world, Relais & Chateau etc , I have never come across such audacity as to charge a newspaper to your bill. We left and we won't be back, and if you have sense you will overlook this hotel. They need a wake up call!!

Well what can I say-my fiance and I have been visiting the Brooklodge since 2003 and plan to have our wedding there in 2009. It is the most sensational hotel we have ever stayed in, it has an excellent reputation and some of the reviews on this site are in our oppinion, so far off the mark. I do understand that the Brooklodge try to attract a certain clientele-thus its pricey enough, as are most high class hotels, If one doesnt want to pay for excellent service and surroundings then why should they receive it? In my oppinion you definately get what you pay for here. We try to get to Macreddin Village at least twice a year and every stay we've had has been nothing but divine! We would HIGHLY reccommend it for a romantic getaway to recharge those batteries! Just remember to bring your credit card! :)

I've been going to Brook Lodge for several years now and despite a couple of minor glitches along the way I've always thoroughly enjoyed the stay. I was a bit aprehensive this time round, having read the reviews, but am please to say that it again lived up to my expectations. The food and service was excellent and the only downside initially was our room. My husband had booked a suite as a treat, but when we saw it we were both disappointed. Because it is built as a Mezzanine style, you don't get the sense of space that you expect from a suite. As such, we asked whether we could downgrade our room to a Junior Suite. While there were none available, we were offered a very spacious Superior room and our room rate was changed without us having to ask. We will definitely continue to go back - if for nothing else the food in the Strawberry tree!

Myself and then girlfriend first went to Brooklodge 6 years ago, we actually got engaged there and went back as a married couple two years later while expecting our first baby. Now a long 4 years later we managed to leave the kids behind for a breakway. Since then we knew the spa had gone up and golf course was under development so knew this trip might be a bit different. Taking some of the previous review comments onboard some areas of the hotel could do with a really thorough cleaning and some of the carpets could do with a wash but on the whole we really enjoyed our time. All the staff including the receptionists were really friendly. Food in the strawberry tree was fantastic as ever (though pricey). We enjoyed the pool and sauna etc and my wife managed to book one treatment which she enjoyed. Only minor downside was there was no bar food available and food in orchard cafe was only ok. We didn't leave the hotel in the two days and just enjoyed relaxing pleasant environment. The three times we've been there we've gone down on a Sunday and left on Tuesday which probably means we've missed a lot of the bigger weekend and wedding crowds.

  • Liked — Strawberry tree restaurant is superb
  • Disliked — no bar food this time, hope its just temporary

The Brooklodge was once our favourite getaway spot- right on our doorstep but once there, we felt a world away. Quiet, peaceful, relaxing and romantic. As regulars visiting for a night or a weekend every 6 to 8 weeks or so for the past couple of years, we were generally looked after quite well. All that changed today. We were booked in for the entire weekend, with plans to meet with the wedding co-ordinator Monday. On arrival late afternoon, the hotel was full and it was a wait to even get checked in. We then found we'd been given one of their smaller Standard Rooms- at approxmately €250 for the Saturday night, it was a cramped affair, that was filled to overflowing with useless furniture whose only purpose seemed to be to take our knees or shins off when trying to walk around the room. On walking immediately into the entrance way, we had to dodge, then edge past a huge wardrobe which would never be used. The bathroom door as it swung inwards just barely missed the sink unit. And it was grubby too. Not just the bathroom, the entire hotel- the staained and worn carpets are in need of a good going over with one of those wet-vac's or for goodness sake, its been a few years now, they should just be replaced. I'm sure they can afford it. Lots of dirty scuff marks on walls and doors. An entire chunk of wall was missing from a wall in the bedroom we were given. Muddy shoes tracked around the pool area, leaving filthy marks on the floor. We noticed it last time we were there but this clinched it- the place is getting worn out and no way would we pay the kind of money they'd be looking for to have our wedding there. Shabby is the word, and thats dreadful for a place thats supposed to be 4 star. They certainly know how to charge 4 star- well overpriced for what is now a shoddy service. Oh yes, we tried to order food in the bar at 615pm and were told the cheft had finished. According to the menus and literature, food is served until 630pm. Anyway, we abandoned the place after a brief meeting with a manager who never even introduced himself. Not only that, he was condescending, confrontational and not the least bit sympathetic or helpful. Hospitality my [--]. His main concern was in off-loading the room again were we to leave. A money grabber. Absolutely disgusted. We were there a total of 3 hours and will never return again.

  • Liked — They do good food, but its pretentious and way overpriced
  • Disliked — Cramped rooms, shabby furnishings, deplorable service
