“Hotel is great if you don't expect luxury! It's all about the LOCATION!!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 22, 2014

Just back from 2 night in this hotel, 19th - 21st April.

I would recommend this hotel to everyone. But bare in mind it is quite dated, with a few flaws, such as;

- Heating was not great in our room
- Water was hit and miss (Stopped working for periods)
- Décor is very dated and a tad shabby
- Strange noise every now and again could be heard in our room, that was quite loud, and happened through the night (possibly heating or water)

On the positive side our room was very spacious and so was the bathroom, it had one of the biggest baths I've ever used, which was great after a long days walk.

The one thing I will rave about is the food! We ate in the restaurant on both nights and the food was AMAZING! Very hot and well cooked, with a good selection!

Now to the location! This is what this place is all about! Right slap bang in the centre of the mountains. Just a mere 10 minute walk until you get to the start of the walking trails. We walked the White and the Red and the views were breathtaking. This is what makes up for the few problems the hotel might have.

The staff were also extremely friendly and very attentive to our needs!

So all in all we had an amazing weekend and we will certainly be back. If you can overlook / prepare for the minor flaws this place has, you will have a brilliant time!

Let's face it, you go here for the outdoors not the indoors!

Room Tip: Apparently there are rooms with a balcony. I will be asking for one when I return.

Thank you so much for your lovely review. We are very sorry about the room not being warm enough on arrival, the heating is usually turned up well in advance of check in and obviously there was a failure on our part to deliver on this occasion.

We are thrilled that you enjoyed the food, and we have passed your compliments to the chef and his team who who are delighted. Our service team are also delighted that you were happy with all aspects of the service that you received.

We certainly are in a most superb location, and with the weather that we have at the moment, there is nowhere nicer in the world to be than Glendalough !

Please do come back and see us soon.

Kind Regards,

Sinéad Doyle

Stayed here to attend a friends birthday. I had read some reviews prior to booking the hotel
and was little concerned with some of the comments.
I asked for a suite and was delighted with the accommodation. The room was bright, clean and the
bed was very comfortable.
After a very pleasant walk around the adjacent monastic settlement we ate in the lounge and the food & service was good.
We enjoyed the get together that evening in the bar attached to the hotel and after a very good nights sleep we had a first class breakfast.
I will certainly return to the hotel possibly for a longer stay.

Room Tip: Room 223 on the second floor was good.

Myself and my better half, after being to the lough, decided to eat here on a Saturday.

As it was not overly busy, we easily got a table and ordered our food.

Our starters were fresh and piping hot. Unfortunately the seafood chowder was quite watery with minimal pieces of fish and the brie was overtaken by the salad that came with it. However we could not complain of the main courses.

There appeared to be a lot of staff issues as quite a number of them were bickering between them. Even when we went to pay, one of the waitresses looked in straight in the eye then turned and started to clear tables leaving me standing there.

The hotel itself needs a refurbishment throughout, especially the toilets which were in a bad way.

All in all the management need to look at more staff training and a spruce up as I believe they are in a comfort zone relying on the bus loads of tourists that frequent Glendalough and should instead raise their game.

Dear Trip Advisor Member,

Thank you most sincerely for taking the time to review your visit here at the Glendalough Hotel over the past weekend. Feedback, particularly the not so positive, is what assists us in reviewing the operation of the hotel, and we are very much at that in between - quiet and busy period.

One aspect that we really pride ourselves on and in which we always wish to excel is in the delivery of excellent food and we are most disappointed that we didn't achieve this with you.

We are most conscious of the fact that we have necessary work to complete on the interior of the hotel, and had hoped to have this commenced at this stage, in particular the public bathrooms which have such a high footfall. Servicing not only our own hotel guests but the majority of visitors to Glendalough.

We very much hope that you will pay a return visit on another occasion, and thank you again for taking the time to post your review.

Kind regards,

Sinéad

We stayed here on the 1st of feb 2014 -we had 1 family room and 1 double- the family room was a bit dated and the wallpaper and paint could do with a touch up- peeling off, damp etc- room was spacious and the shower was lovely and the bed comfy so it wouldn't take much to do the smaller things with the room. The double room on the first floor was much better- Breakfast was nice but please invest in some decent brand tea bags and coffee- our tea was grey and the coffee not great - for me this is a big no no in an Irish hotel that you get a decent cup of tea with your breakfast- this hotel has potential but just needs to look at the smaller things that they are currently overlooking- the staff in the breakfast room were all very friendly and helpful- also could do with better lighting in the car park- my granny was with us and she tripped over a sleeper at the car park entrance and hurt her wrist- could of been more serious and the wooden walk way is also very slippery when wet.

The location of this hotel could not be more perfect. It's right next to the Glendalough Monastic Site and visitor centre and there's also a beautiful nature walk.
It therefore has a lot of coaches visiting.
Breakfast was fine as was dinner, although meals were pricey (like anywhere where the Euro is concerned) but they did have child options which was good.
Staff were OK - while a couple were friendly, we got very few smiles from others.
I would advise families, if feasible, to have adjoining rooms in the newer end of the hotel as our adjoining rooms were bright and lovely with nice views.
There were lots of beautiful views and it was quiet at night time.
But there is a lack of consistency with rooms where quality is concerned as others are in need of TLC.
Our friends stayed in one of the family rooms which was very tired with bits of wallpaper coming away from the wall, a huge hole around a bedside wall plug and a large and unpleasant brown stain on the side of the divan bed (I assume this was hot chocolate). It was also very dark as there was only one small window
Some other parts of the hotel were also tired and worn as a result of having a lot of people who pass through it.
It's best selling point was definitely it's location but the hotel has the potential to be a lot better than it is currently.

We went there for our anniversary as we were looking for something close to dublin with something to do. The hotel is average, staff were very friendly. We had a meal deal with the hotel, the diner was not really special. I would not recommend at all the goat tart starter as it was just a huge slice of goat cheese on a pre bought tart case. We had ordered breakfast brought to our room . Breakfast were very very dry.
A part from that the hotel stay were ok, We love the view of our room

We are a Dublin family who wanted somewhere close to Dublin but could enjoy the local trails and have some family time, we booked at short notice as I wanted the weather to line up. This hotel didnt disappoint, the location is superb and puts you at the starting point for the well marked trails in the area. The staff were great, friendly and helpful. We had our meals there and the food was good with nice touches like the homemade bread at dinner which was very tasty and the children's menu was good quality and flexible. We had no complaints about the room, it was clean and the bathroom was modern. As for value for money, I cant complain, we were (I assume) paying an off season price which was probably better value than some B&B's so for that I was happy. Being nearly "locals" its not somewhere I would choose to stay in high season but only because the area is drivable from Dublin.
For anyone coming from abroad, do your research about the area. While not knocking the area, its probably the "jewel in the crown" of Wicklow and it gets very busy over the summer with coach tours etc. There is also great vibe if sightseeing/hillwalking during the day and the hotel does a nice outdoor cafe during the summer but the area is a bit isolated and Laragh nearby is more of a crossroads so it wouldnt be my first choice as a "base" for a longer stay. Then again the location is fairly unique in Wicklow offering a week's worth of easy to serious hill walking, pleasant lake views without the need of driving anywhere so if that was your objective it would be spot on.

Room Tip: Our bed was Queen size which was fine for us but anyone over "6ft" might want to enquire a...
