“The place to stay if planning an outing to Glendalough”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 30, 2011

Derrymore is an eclectic B&B overlooking the upper lake of Glendalough. The views and proximity make it the place to stay in the area. The hosts were kind, generous, and well-humored.

The beds were very comfortable, our breakfasts were some of the best we had in the country, and Penny was a wonderful hostess.

We spent a long weekend here and can only find good things to say about it. (Although the delicious breakfasts could give you a weight problem if you stayed here for weeks!) Both the B&B and the surroundings are well worth a detour.

We arrived very tired in Glendalough, after driving on the left side of charming, but narrow roads for the first time! We got out of the car and felt like we could finally take a deep breath as we took in the gorgeous view of the lake and valley from Derrymore House. Penny came out to greet us, showed us to our spacious rooms and made us tea. My 80 year old mother just wanted to stay at Derrymore House the next day and rest in the quiet beauty of its setting while we went hiking. Great access (right out the front door and down the hill) to the most beautiful hiking trails in Ireland. Penny packed us a delicious lunch. Could walk in the evening light to the ancient monastic ruins along the boardwalk. Perfect!

Derrymore house is in a wonderful location with beautiful gardens and scenery. It is overlooking the lakes of Glendalough and it's only a few minutes from the monastic city! The hosts are wonderful and so accomodating!!! We turned up 1 week early (our fault!! typing error) and they still took us in!! Penny even made us a cup of tea with warm scones/cakes.The room was spacious, had a living area and a lovely bathroom. The view from the breakfast room is out to the lakes. Breakfast was lovely - homecooked and fresh. We only stayed for one night but you could stay for longer as there are so many amazing walks in the area. So if you would like excellent service, views and stay .....go to Derrymore House!!!

My young adult daughter and I were recommended to stay at Derrymore House, a Bed and Breakfast within walking distance of the treasures of Glendalough. We were at the end of a 26 day visit to Ireland. At first we thought we would be there only two days, but we knew the moment we set our bags in our room that we had landed in a magical, serene and incredibly beautiful place and we hoped there was enough room at the Inn to allow us to finish up our trip which was already a magnificent experience. Pat and Penny are incredibly gracious, they made adjustments and we were able to settle in for several more nights and delicious breakfasts. Penny was able to accommodate our dietary preferences and is an absolute dear. The breakfast room/ lounge is large and comfortable with wonderful decor and great reading material. Pat was so kind and assisted us when needed, made helpful suggestions, and felt more like a friend than a host. The view of the Lower Lake and the proximity to the National Park is extrodinary. Watching the shadows and light change over the mountains, the mist on the lake, and the wildlife teeming (or was it a nyad in that water?) was soothing music to the soul. And all of this within a stone's throw of the monastary, churches, holy places and incredible beauty.

Beautiful B&B in a wonderful location. We had a view from our window across the lake to hills and forest. Very helpful and friendly hosts. Best breakfasts on our trip!
Good spot to go walking. Noise from adjacent rooms a bit of a nuisance at times.
