“Allergies - easily dealt with”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 25, 2014

We called into Kinvara on our way home from our holiday in Clare for an evening meal. It was about 8pm and this restaurant was packed. We were met at the door and informed we would have a 30 min wait for a table - 2 adults and 4 children.

The only seats available to wait at were the tall chairs at the bar and this was entirely OK as this is more of a restaurant than a bar so most people were eating. The bar man was the saviour of the day as he chatted and messed around with our kids as we were waiting. They were laughing and joking with him and the wait was made so easy as a result.

When our order was being taken, I explained about our daughters allergies (all dairy products; all egg; all fish and seafood; and all nuts). I asked if they done half portions of any of the meat/chicken dishes - they hesitated at this, trying to think of what could be done, and then the barman intervened and suggested a minute steak. This was a perfect solution as it was basically what Sinead wanted - she had steak in a recent restaurant and it went down a treat.

On the note of half portions - this restaurant offers half portions for a lot of their seafood dishes which delighted our eldest daughter who had tiger prawns. There is also seafood chowder on the kids menu which our youngest daughter had a go at (3 yrs old). This is so refreshing from the usual kids menu (though the usual sausages, goujons etc were present as well).

The minute steak was huge - Sinead devoured it with all her potatoes and vegetables so it went down a treat.

We like to think the quality of a restaurant and the food it serves is quickly revealed to us through how easily they can deal with Sinead's allergies. It shows how freshly prepared their food is etc. The Pier Head qualifies with flying colours.

All in, a great restaurant in a beautiful location and a lovely way to end our holiday. Thanks to everyone at The Pier Head Restaurant, Kinvara, Co Galway. If you have the opportunity, have a meal here. It is a great spot.

“Luscious Lunch”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 23, 2014

Touring the West of Ireland is full of amazing scenic surprises. The Yellow Pier House sits on the edge of the sea and is very visible from the Kinvara Castle. I love Kinvara and the quirky little shops and cafés. We had eaten homemade scones at the small Friday market before walking out to the Castle. So we had rumbled up a good appetitive. This Pier House has developed over the years into a lovely establishment. It's akin with the Captains Table in Myrtle Beach, I think. The staff are very friendly. Lobster was the special of the day at 30€. The standard is quite high so I think considering all, it's not expensive. Mussels and hake were brought and were cooked to perfection.
The view is lovely over the little pier, the blue sea and the old Castle.
We had travelled the coast road from Doolin to Ballyvaughan ( not to be missed) and then onto Kinvara to chat with the locals at the market.
So by the afternoon we were looking for good food, relaxation and a good ambience, we found our solace here.

“Delightful West Ireland Dinner”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 22, 2014

Our group of seven tried to get in here on Sunday evening, and it was packed, so we decided to try somewhere else since we had two tired children with us. The manager ran out and told us it was only a 25 minute wait and he'd get us a good table. The kids were getting cranky as the evening wore on, so we promised to come again. Glad we did. We ordered calamari, mussels, prawns and chowder amongst us for starters. All were terrific and service very good. For entrees, we feasted on sole, more mussels, prawns, duck and everyone agreed their meal was very well prepared. With two bottles of wine, starters and entrees, we passed on dessert. Service was friendly and so were the patrons. We ended up hanging out at the bar where there was some music and locals gathering for craic and to celebrate a birthday. A very enjoyable dinner and evening. My sister and I actually came back the next day for lunch. Outdoor area has a very scenic view.

“Great spot great service”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 22, 2014

Stayed in Kinvara last weekend to meet some friends from overseas for a game of golf. Kinvara was really busy as it should be in August. We forgot to book a meal on the Saturday night. I walked down to the Pier Head at about 5pm to find Mike up to his eyes with a full restaurant. I asked for a table for 8 at 8, he just laughed, but said he would try and do something for us for 9.30. We arrived at 8.30 to a packed restaurant.
True to his word he had organised a table for us upstairs. The staff were amazingly friendly and helpful for such a busy time. Very well trained. Got some wine on the table quickly (always a good thing!!) and took our order without delay. The food was excellent and well presented. In particular I would recommend the calamari and chorizo starter which was very well presented, and tender. Evan a rare fillet was delivered a point. Not always a common occurence at 10pm on a sat night. Also had an interesting Voignier/shiraz wine from Yalumba, drank like a good pinot.

Well done Mike and team at the Pier Head.
