“Merriman Hotel”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 26, 2008

Our family of four spent one night at the Merriman in March 2008. We hadn't booked ahead, but had no problem getting a room for the night after showing up at about 5pm after visiting the Cliffs of Moher and the Burren.

Our room had a king and one twin bed. The front desk clerk was very helpful and personally brought up an extra cot for our daughter along with extra linens and towels. The beds were very comfortable. There was a small table with two chairs. The carpet needed to be replaced. Our room looked out over the parking lot, with a view of the bay in the distance. Rooms on the other side of the hallway looked out over the main street. The bathroom was large, but the tile around the tub was mildewy and needed a good cleaning.

Breakfast was included and served in a very nice dining room. Selections were limited and the waiter was aloof and unfriendly. We ate and quickly left.

The hotel is located on Kinvara's main street, with two grocery stores across the street and easy access to a handful of pubs and restaurants. Unfortunately there was no live music while we were there.

We stopped by the Pier Head pub for a pint -- it had a lovely peat fire with windows looking out over the bay.

Overall, the Merriman was just average -- it could use some updating, but it was a comfortable and quiet night after a long day of driving and sight-seeing.

My boyfriend and I have just returned from a weekend break in the Merriman Hotel in Kinvara. After reading some reviews we were a bit nervous but once we arrived out fears were diminished. The hotel itself is small but it has all the amenities that a larger hotel would have. The staff were very pleasant and professional and everything was up to scratch in the line of cleanliness. Our rooms were clean and had all the normal facilities of a hotel room. On Saturday night we ate in the Quilty Room Restaurant which was excellent. We also ate in other parts of the town like the Pier Head which got great reviews but definitely the Quilty Room had the better standard-waiting staff, ambiance and quality of food.
The hotel is in the centre of the town close to all pubs, shops and the harbour so no taxis are needed. The town itself is beautiful, peaceful and in all a great place to visit with fabulous views from the pier. It is also very close to North Clare and Galway so if you decide to visit the Aran Islands or Galway city it is very handy. The nightlife in Kinvara is typical of a small village in Ireland with music in some pubs. We enjoyed it because we wanted a quite, peaceful break with no nightclubs and if this is what you want Kinvara and the Merriman is the place to go!

  • Liked — Convience-middle of the town
  • Disliked — Double bed was two beds pushed together!

We arrived without a booking and were charged 130 Euros per night for a room for two people. Rooms were clean and of average size. The staff were very friendly and polite.
Kinvara is extremely pretty and has at least 5 Pubs, there was music in a few of them every night. Also music at the Merriman on Saturday
We thought the Pier Head was the best pub restauraunt in town.

I've just returned from a 3 day stay at the Merriman.
The Merriman is the only hotel in the town of Kinvara which is approx 20 miles from Galway. The town is pleasant enough with plenty of pubs so great if you like a tipple or two. There aren't really many good restaurants in the town however - only the Pier Head is worth eating at. The hotel has a restaurant too which is ok for a steak but that’s about it. Avoid eating anywhere else in the town– it won’t be a good experience!
The hotel itself is OK - as others have said, it's definitely in need of some money being spent on it now but having said that everything in my room worked and it was clean and tidy.
The only annoyances were that my room overlooked the back of the hotel and one night I got woken up by a delivery truck at some ungodly hour.
The only other disappointment was with the breakfasts which were not particular satisfying. The cooked breakfast was quite small and they used low quality ingredients.
Having said all this - I wouldn't mind staying at the Merriman again for one or two nights but I definitely would not stay any longer than that!

2 of 5 stars Reviewed October 8, 2006

We stayed at the Merriman for one evening in September, 2006, on our way from Galway to Killarney. We had driven the Connemara region earlier that day and my husband was tired of driving so we decided to stop in Kinvara and stay there. My sister and I had previously stayed at the Merriman in 2004, and I remembered it as a clean, unique little hotel due to its thatched roof. From the street, the Merriman is still quaintly impressive. However, the front desk clerk was on the phone when we arrived, and he did not even silently acknowledge or make eye contact with us, even though we were standing just two feet away from him. He continued to speak for a good 5 minutes on what sounded like personal business, and had my husband not been so tired, I would have turned around and left at that point. Obviously he could not have cared less that we were there. When we eventually got to our room (no help with the bags in rainy weather but thankfully they have a lift) we found that it could have used a good cleaning, and refurbishment of the shabby carpet and furnishings. We went downstairs to the pub dining room to have a drink and dinner, and found no one at all eating there (and it WAS dinner time.) While we sipped our drinks, I noticed the lone server in open sight at the bar, picking through a box of silverware and using her fingernail to scrape presumably what the dishwasher hadn't removed. Well, that turned me off to dinner, so we went down the street to a nice little restaurant overlooking the Kinvara harbor, and had a very good meal in a livelier atmosphere. The bed was clean enough so we got a good night's sleep, and the next morning the female front desk clerk gave us a welcoming hello and helped us with information about the Shannon ferry. With its quaint building, roadside location, and spacious pub/dining room, the Merriman could be a desirable place to stay if the rooms were refurbished and the staff better trained in customer service. But I would not stay there again the way things are now.

  • Liked — The thatched roof
  • Disliked — Check- in customer service
  • Tips/Secrets — Don't stay here, there are much better hotels....

When we arrived they could not find our booking, luckily I had an email trail to prove I had made one. The room allocated was shabby and overlooking the carpark after being assured that we would have a room overlooking Galway Bay - none of the rooms at this hotel do.
We were transferred to another room after complaining, cancelled the dinner reservation and the following night's stay. All in all very disappointed, it was probably once a lovely hotel but no money has been spent on it for a while. The website is misleading especially as we have also stayed at La Place in the Jersey Islands and this is a lovely hotel, no comparison.
We were very lucky with getting a room and spent the next night (my birthday) at Lough Inagh Lodge, absolutelty lovely and they have a resident mother and daughter donkeys, wonderful and more than made up for my previous disappointment.

I have been staying in the Merriman over the past 5 years, normally during the summer regatta in August. This past weekend it was sad to see the decline on a once very good hotel. The room wasn’t the cleanest- especially in the bathroom, the décor in the bedrooms tried, broken and burn marked(??) the dinner unimaginative, the waiting staff – rude and not trained properly. I’m a true believer of work philosophy being set from the top down and I do believe that the apathy of the Merriman management has filtered down to the customer facing staff. I felt ripped-off on the rate, but also knew that any comments I could have made would not have even registered with them. The impression I got, the Merrimen want your money for very little effort & just wanted you out

  • Liked — Stayed in the hotel before this & its location for the regatta
  • Disliked — The whole service attitude of the staff
  • Tips/Secrets — Don't go unless they have pulled up their socks
