“You Have to Check Out the Statue & Plaque Across the Street”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 23, 2013

We had seen signs for Joyce's Craft Shop and Art Gallery as we driving to the Connemara National Park on Thursday 10/17/13. It was about time for a leg stretch, so we pulled into the parking lot across the street. We were instantly drawn to the statue & plaque that stood in front of a small lake. The huge stone statue is of the Connemara Giant (Conn - Son of the Sea) erected in 1999 by Joyce's Craft Shop for no apparent reason! The plaque in back of the statue states "On this site in 1897 nothing happened" A definite photo opportunity.

After seeing Joyce's sense of humor, we went over to her wonderful non-touristy shop, no cheap trinkets. Terrific Irish jewelry, books, knitwear, scarves, matted Irish name prints, beautiful artwork and the hard-to-find Connemara green marble.

Tucked in the tiny village of Recess, 13 miles south of Clifden on the main N59 road. A must stop if you are in the area.

“What a find”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 5, 2013

We left Connemara and went to Galway looking for a piece of Connemara marble. The place would only sell tiny offering saying "Ireland is running out of this marble". One of the cutters whispered that we needed to back track to Recess where the quarries were.

We had just come by the Joyce store which was sort of out by itself and advertised itself as the best place in Ireland. Right!

It was. It had tons of neat stuff and LOTS of marble. They told us they had just opened a new quarry. After we asked about the weird response at the place in Galway they said it was a "tour bus place". That is, the bus drivers get a bit of a bribe to stop at these places and dump their load to buy up. Sort of a little scam.

Well, this place is no scam and we are going back next month.
