“Relaxed, Beautiful, Outstanding Food, Ambience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 27, 2014

Stayed at Ballynahinch Castle January 24-26th 2014. Was 8 years since we were there last but we were glad to see the quality, service and hotel has not diminished in anyway. It is a little pricey but we knew that before we went so it didn't spoil anything. Staff were ultra-helpful in all areas - reception, bar (both day & night staff), restaurant (especially the french girl working there) etc. Food was fantastic with a great range. Really good wine menu too. Due to the recent bad weather (lots of rain) - the river was fuller than usual and really made for some stunning walks/photos. Would highly recommend trying the seasonal and local foods from their menu too.

Room Tip: Try to get a river room. That said, we didn't have one (as the hotel was full) and the room was...

Up until this January my wife and I together with our regular companions would spend some down time at Ballynahinch Castle wining and dining ,enjoying drinks in the bar,and lovely walks in the grounds of the castle, but sadly no more - why?

Well, last year we arrived as usual and were looking forward to a few days of rest and relaxation. Unfortunately on the first evening my wife took ill and the following morning,as her condition had not improved, we had to check out early and my wife and I made our way to Galway where she was hospitalised. My wife was diagnosed with pneumonia - she was very sick.

We insisted that our friends stayed on as a family member of theirs was due to join the party the following evening.I rang Ballynahinch from the hospital ,informed a staff member of our predicament ,and settled the hotel bill .

Thankfully my wife recovered but my point is this .

Ballynahinch Castle promotes itself as a first class establishment and for many reasons I can endorse that fact ,but when a follow up enquiry from the hotel would have been a nice touch we got nothing. Having witnessed how the manager works the place with his concen for client well being we now have to accept,on all the evidence, that the level of sincerity show was precious little (no great surprise)

Ballynahinch you let yourself down - if you want to be considered best in class then first of all you need to show some. Sadly after many years of satisfaction we(and our friends) will not be returning.

Pricey but well worth it. Our room was the largest of any on our Scotland/London/Ireland trip. The trails on the grounds along the river were suitable for the inexperienced hiker and the views were outstanding. We were there on a Saturday night and they had traditional Irish music live in their pub.

We stayed in Ballynahinch Castle along with another couple just before Christmas for a single night and were blown away by the warm welcome, exceptional staff and a wonderful boutique style bedrooms overlooking the river.
We arrived, stayed during and left amidst heavy rain, however, it in no way could dampen our experience. The old-style, country house décor and hunting lodge style bar was spotless and complimented by modern, impeccably decorated bedrooms, an excellent menu and highly knowledgeable staff regarding the menu and history of the Castle and surrounding area. The only critique I could make is less formal attire to appropriately suit the surroundings. A most homely welcome into stunning fairy-tale surroundings. Somewhere we will make a conscious decision to return to for more than one night.

Room Tip: Request a bedroom overlooking the river

Ballynahinch Castle is remote and secluded. The Garmen GPS could not find it. This is more of a converted mansion that has been expanded with additional rooms, than a castle. The setting is peaceful and serene, has a lot of walking trails along the river that goes by the back of the hotel. The room we had was large, comfortable, quiet, quite clean, with the appropriate amenities, and overlooked the river, with river access out the back door. Service at the front desk was warm and friendly, and a gentleman insisted, and labored, to take our luggage to the room with us, through corridor after corridor. Later we saw him waiting tables in the restaurant as well, and doing it very well. Food in the restaurant was good but too pricey. Some of the service in the restaurant was maybe a little snobby, but later we had a drink in the bar and they were extremely nice. Front desk people at checkout were also very nice. This is a quiet and tranquil place to stay, with no other options for nightlife or options for food nearby, which was a negative. The countryside is gorgeous, however, and worth the trip. Overall, I would say the best part of staying here was the seclusion and the serenity.

Room Tip: If you are looking for quiet, serene, tranquil, relaxation, and don't mind paying extra for dinn...

Ballynahinch Castle in Connemara was truly a delight to stay. We stayed here to celebrate my husband’s birthday. We choose a superior room which had a 4 poster bed, sitting area, a large closet and dual sinks in the bathroom. The room was fabulous. The only problem we had was figuring out all the handles on the tub shower.

Check in was a breeze and a bellman carried our bags to our room as there is no elevator. I felt bad about this since he was older than us. The castle overlooks a Salmon river and there are walking paths all around. If you don’t eat at the castle you will need to drive a ways. We ate one night in the pub and the 2nd night in the dining room. If you do plan on eating in the dining room book it in advanced and you will save 10 euros per person. I enjoyed the pub as the fishermen would bring in their catch to weigh.

The stay can be pricey but having never stayed in a castle before it was well worth it and the service was impeccable!

It might look like a faded grand only lady but this Hotel is well able to put itself out there amongst the best. A superb experience, staff were brilliant, food fabulous and the room bright, airy and luxurious. We admittedly had the benefit of the fabulous summer weather of 2013 (!) but I would hazard a guess and say that it would also prove a haven of restfulness in winter time, with the great turf fire blazing. Obviously fishing ranks supreme because of the rivers proximity but it serves as a brilliant base to tour the most scenic of areas. Looking forward already to our next visit.
