“Scenery out of a fairy tale”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 5, 2012

We had an amazing evening and loved our room in the newest wing facing the river!
This property is straight out of a fairy tale! The pub is cozy and casual, with a fire to warm the room. Dinner at the restaurant was lovely. The food is locally sourced and high quality. The castle is off the beaten path (about 1 1/2 hrs. beyond Galway), so having taken the trip to Connemara, it's worth also visiting Kylemore Abbey and its tiny Victorian chapel. Be sure to watch out for the sheep on the road!

Room Tip: We enjoyed Room 39 (which was a middle price point). It has a four poster bed, river view and nice b...

We had an awesome stay at this place - the location is just breathtaking. We only had time for one night, but wished we could have stayed much longer. The room was lovely and the view spectacular. It was expensive to stay - but a wonderful experience. The walks around the castle are gorgeous, breakfast was fantastic - the pub is cozy and we hung out there for awhile. We then spent time relaxing in our room. I would completely recommended this place to stay.

This was the worst place we stayed at during our two week stay in Ireland. We stayed in a suite which was large and comfortable but the customer service is cold and snobby and lacks the Irish hospitality that keeps us coming back to this beautiful country. Reception was cold and unwelcoming and it seemed to be an annoyance that we wanted to book a table in the pub for dinner. We ate in the pub and the food was decent but the service horrible. It took about 20 minutes just to get a glass of water. Both waiters were constantly attending to a table of six who I guess were more important than us. A maid walking into the bedroom of our suite while I was on a phonecall. No knock on the door. We skipped breakfast because we just wanted to leave the place. When checking out, we got a gruff "Room number?" with no "good morning" or even a grin. I regret not having chosen the Abbeyglen. If you're snooty and like wasting your money, then this place is for you.

Dear visitor,
You seem to have had a terrible experience and one that is contrary to all we strive for. Guest service is what we have built our reputation on and I am so sorry that on this occasion we failed you. I appreciate that you may not wish to; but I would love to discuss your experience directly with you. I can be contacted on the hotel email address. Thank you, Patrick; General Manager

We could only stay one night, but it was worth it! We had a Classic room in the main castle building and the staff gave us the best room in the place - 3rd floor corner, with views of the river out of both windows. It was spacious and gracious. We enjoyed some wine and Irish cheese while contemplating the river. You have to love a hotel that provides a map of the grounds so you can wander at will. In the morning we took the Lakeside and River loop, about an hour of easy and pleasant walking. Enjoyed the fishermen--felt almost as though we, too were part of the "fishing estate." Breakfast was elegant and wonderful. My only (very small) complaint is that the Pub menu was a bit overpriced. Of course they have a captive audience, and the fish of the day was fabulous - a melange of fresh halibut, salmon, crab, and smoked haddock in a light cream sauce. But we paid about 5-7E more per plate than we had been for food of similar quality. However, the good house Cotes de Rhone was very reasonably priced and made up for it. They really should provide a bit more history of the previous owners in a brochure or something. We sortof accidentally found the cabinet in the study with the Indian Prince/Cricket Star's memorabilia, but had to wait until we got home to Google him to find out more. Faschinating!

We stayed here for 2 nights during our recent trip to Ireland. The drive up was breathtaking. The staff couldn't have been more helpful. We stayed in a superior room with an awesome view of the river. The breakfast was amazing and plenty of it. We ate dinner one night in the pub and it was outstanding. We will definitely be back. A bit pricey but so worth it.

We arrived at Ballynahinch for a 3 day stay and were not disappointed. The hotel is beautiful. We booked a Luxury room and were very pleased. Our room had a wonderful view over the river and Bear Island. Food in the restauarant and pub was very good. Don't miss the guided walking tour; our guide Noel was very knowledgeable, informative and friendly. We would not hesitate in recommending Ballynahinch for a relaxing getaway.

The drive up is on Ireland's twisty and winding roads. Watch out for grazing sheep! We had arrived late, the dogs greeted and walked us in, there was a warm and welcoming fire in the foyer, and the staff was wonderful and set us up for a late snack of scones, fruit, cheese, and tea. The rooms and building felt more like a manor house than a castle but it is beautiful! As another reviewed mentioned, there are plenty of rooms and spaces to sit and relax. If the weather is nice, enjoy the outdoor trails. Wake up early to capture some beautiful shots in the early morning light. Take a stroll along the lake and river, or just down the drive. Take at least a couple of days to enjoy the surroundings of this Castle Hotel.

Room Tip: Ask for a view of the lake or river.
