“The best hotel and restaurant on the island”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 8, 2012

I stayed here for several weeks, and I also stayed at the over-priced Inishbofin hotel on the other side of the island. Mrs. Murray baked us fresh bread, and she was so warm, accommodating and empathetic to our various requests. The food is not only the best on the island (try the seafood chowder!), but it is also the most affordable. Additionally, this place has the best rates for an overnight stay. It is clean, and there is an old world charm to the place with lots of history in the Ancient West Quarter. We enjoyed some of the greatest names in traditional music nearly every day and night in the pub, and the dancing was just spectacular. The local patrons are the warmest, salt of the earth kind of folks. I cannot recommend this place enough. The cook is spectacular, and the waitresses are all deserving of as big of a tip as you can afford to leave. Going forward, this will be the only place we stay.

Room Tip: There is free wifi in the new annex rooms in the back.

I have been going to this hotel for a one night reunion with a couple of friends every year for the past nine years. I took the great welcome and high standard for granted so it never occurred to me to review it. Guests are collected from the pier usually by a lovely woman who always is delighted that we have arrived for our annual visit. This hotel is a family business that has obviously developed a great repeat trade over the years. The rooms are excellent, the food is good and every member of the staff is determined to make one's visit, however short, enjoyable.
On the night on which I stayed the international clientele in the bar ensured a very enjoyable and interesting night. Our dinner was excellent. I asked for cheese instead of the deserts on the menu and was rewarded with a great cheese plate. One of my companions did not get up in time for breakfast in the morning and when he arrived very late meekly requested tea and toast. he was given a full breakfast with a smile. As the owners have to run an hotel I am not recommending that his example is followed by all guests but this shows the commitment to service by all the staff. I hope that my friends and I will be able to continue our annual trip to Murray's Doonmore Hotel for many years.

This was the highlight of an already incredible two weeks in Ireland. The food in the dining room was quite simply the best we'd had in years and we eat out a lot in high end restaurants. Thank You Aileen. The service was unsurpassed both in care but mostly in friendliness, Thank You Fiona. The room was clean and the Pub never stopped amazing us with the music that just happened from islanders and guests, and quite a cross section of interesting people they were. Last but not least Thanks to the Island itself with its stunning beauty and ability to carry you away. We'll be back. Michael

Room Tip: Ocean view in the older section suited us best.

A great stay at this lovely hotel. Wonderful sea views from the simple but comfortable bedrooms.. Really great helpful staff who could not do enough to help. Great bar at all times of the day. Restaurant and bar food were top rate and generous portions. Will return again without a doubt.
Dany Dandin (party of 4).

Room Tip: Rooms on first floor have great sea views.

Always a good selection of food on offer, check out their specials board. The best accompaniment to the good food is the service and ambience at the Doonmore hotel bar (Murphy’s). Always greeted with a smile, efficient and helpful, what more could you ask for.
We stayed at the Doonmore last year & ate there every night (I reviewed this stay at the time), however, this time we had self catering accommodation but couldn’t wait to nip down to the Doonmore. Looking forward to going back soon!

We were only on the Island for a day but we had lunch and a drink at The Doonmore. The menu and the price were great. The staff were extremely helpful and oozed Irish hospitality. Next time we hope to stay on Inishbofin for a few days and will certainly check in to Doonmore.

A tip - dont worry if your run short of cash - although there are no cash machines on the Island nearly everywhere gives cash-back.

We (as many contributors)have stayed all over the world but absolutely nowhere has affored a welcome like this and such genuine hospitality. We couldn't wait to return this summer and brought friends with us who were smitten with the place!
The hotel exudes the charm and comfort of Ireland many years ago...its just so refreshing these days. Its basic but spotlessly clean and homely. We experineced the extremes of Bofin....blistering sunshine one day and gale force winds/rain the next!Needless to say the gales meant a tremendous day at the bar in front of a roaring peat fire and lots of great company. The previous day was a walk around the whole island and some fantastic pollock fishing off the rocks.
Food was great, wonderful night's sleep, and hearty breakfasts.Aileen & staff thanks for another wonderful stay and hope to be back in September.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Murrays' Doonmore Hotel, the most westerly island hotel off the coast of Europe, was built in 1969 and has been owned and managed by the Murray family ever since. We pride ourselves on our hands on approach to customer service so you will be dealing with a member of the family at most stages of your stay. This is not a boutique hotel, so if that is what you seek then perhaps The Doonmore Hotel is not for you. Unless, that is, you are prepared to give us the opportunity to change your mind and show you the value of genuine hospitality and the personal touch of an owner managed hotel. We care about what we do because it is not just a job, it is our life. Our staff are superb also and they know that our raison d'etre is to ensure that every customer, from a child ordering a bag of crisps to a group of adults staying for a week, deserve only the best service possible. Our hotel and bar food is famous for its consistently high quality and value for money. The accommodation is clean, comfortable and warm even if a few rooms are slightly old fashioned. The atmosphere is welcoming, homely and relaxed. It is no accident that we have a large percentage of repeat business stretching back to the early days. The proof of the pudding is in the eating (and we bake all our own!) So come out and visit and experience Murrays' Doonmore Hotel for yourselves. Aileen & Andrew Murray ... more   less
