“Amazing stone work”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 25, 2013

The castle perfectly fits with the incredible dry stone walls of Inishere Island. If you stand South of the castle you have a magnificent view over the main village and the harbour.

“Spectacular views”

Great spot overlooking Inis Oirr harbour and village. Ruin is open to exploration. Watch out for the massive cow pies!

“Historic castle ruin”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 5, 2013

This is a long slog on foot or you can take a jaunting cart part way. The castle remains are centuries old and were built by the early settlers on Inis Oirr. It is impressive from a distance or close up.

“You can see it from everywhere, but do the hike”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 18, 2012

There's just something magical about walking into something that was built in the 1400s. The empty beer cans and the faint smell of urine take away from the magic a bit, but it is still a great site and affords a lovely view of the town below. If you walk down to the south of the castle you'll come to Formna Village which has a perfect thatched cottage that I wish I got a photo of but ran out of film. It's owned by a horse-drawn carriage driver and if you get there after he's done for the day you will see the horse with his head sticking inside the door of the house being fed by his master. There is also a nice little cafe just beneath O'Brien's castle for coffee, tea or pizza. The young woman who runs it looks a little solemn at first, but if you get her smiling you'll see the truth in lyrics of that famous song about Irish eyes.
