“Lovely stay in August 2012”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 10, 2012

Our family, couple and 3 children, had a wonderful time here in August. It was a very cool summer and the heat was programmed to come on every night for several hours to take the chill off. Hot water was plentiful in the shower. The kitchen was well stocked with milk, eggs, tea and anything else could be found at very good prices at the Spar which is a short walk away. As there were only 3 or 4 bedrooms. The rooms all had individual keys so security was not an issue. You also have a key to the main hostel door. The lady running the hostel was very helpful. She stopped by once or twice a day to check up. When she found our children's clothes were wet (it rained during our stay) she took them and dried them in the dryer for us. She made sure we had extra duvets in case we were cold. The Aran Islands can be cold and damp but we never felt that way in our beds here. We definitely had no issue with any bugs or bites. The sitting room is lovely (TV and books) and we had no problem having a quiet beer there should the mood take you. The hostel also backs onto one of the best children's playgrounds I have ever seen. It adjoins the island elementary school and the playground has activities for every age from 2 to 18. There is a basketball court and an area that looks like a handball court as well as lots of active equipment for climbing and playing. This was fantastic after a day of sightseeing when we were cooking dinner. We could easily pop back to the sitting room every few minutes and see the our children playing in the playground. They had fun meeting some of the island children there. I would definitely stay here again.

Room Tip: All the rooms seemed to be quiet and clean. There is one room that is right off the kitchen so I gu...

We had a very inhospitable experience in this hostel-lady that runs it could be overheard yelling to for 5-10mins after some guests had a few quiet drinks in the guests tv room which was located in a separate building to her living quarters. Despite the attempt by the 'bloody mainlanders' -aka her guests to apologise for any inconvenience she simply wouldn't calm down. The entire house was rudely awoken by her shouting about how the hostel was for sleeping in and not for enjoying a drink. We left the hostel as we found it and won't be coming back!

i've been all through europe and stayed at many hostels. . .this place is definitely in the bottom half of them. rooms are dusty, cold and damp. no lockups for baggage, and what 'charm' could be had was available in the ti joe watty's bar 100 metres down the road, lol. the proprietor sat in her chair like a certain star wars character and smoked heavily. the fellow travellers are the saving grace, as it does seem to attract a nice mix of people from around the world. the biggest selling point is proximity to the pub, which is dynamite. the mainistir house down the road is funkier with an absolutely fantastic buffet, quite suited to vegetarians. will stay there next time, instead.

We have just returned from a 2 night stay in the Artist's Lodge and it was fantastic. This is a small, friendly place which is close to everything. It has 2 dorms and a double room (which we booked), there's also a fridge, basic food (milk, tea, bread, cereals) and a cosy living room reminiscent of the Father Ted series (interestingly, the hostel was actually the former parochial house!) with satellite TV, a small library and board games.

Marian and Johnny - who run the hostel - warmly received us and made us feel right at home, providing us with maps, books and tips on how to get around the island.

In the evening we went to Watty's pub (2 mins walk) which seems to be the only night spot on the island. You will find live music there every night, both traditional and blues (Johnny Gorman from the hostel and Rob Strong play there)

The best thing to see on the island are the cliffs at Dunangus (we hiked the 5 miles there and then got a minibus back to the village), in the afternoon we went horseback riding, as there is an equestrian school 2 mins down the road at the Kelly House B&B. We followed Stephen from the school on our horses down to a beach and around the outside of the village along the bóithrín and it was absolutely great!

Crime is non-existent on the island. We did not have any keys to get into the hostel, we left our rooms unlocked and we did not have any trouble!

There are only two warnings I would give to people:

1. If you're sensitive to cigarette smoke you may be uncomfortable at times, this is specially true in Watty's pub. People smoke in the doorway and therefore smoke invariably comes inside.

2. You may hear about Ragus (a one hour show of Traditional Irish music, song and dance). It costs 20Euro per person, and everyone has says it is a rip-off / tourist trap.

  • Liked — Friendliness of Marian, John and the other guests
  • Disliked — Occasional smell of cigarette smoke

One of the nicest hostels I ever stayed in .. a short walk away from the pier in Killronnan (approx. 10 min.) this hostel is situated on a little hill behind the village, with a wonderfull view over the bay from the terrace, and still near enogh to the supermarket, a nice pub .... The owner, a couple in their 40´s, gave me really nice and haerty welcome and made me feel very welcome throughout my whole stay. The hostel is really small, just 2 dorm-rooms, one twin-room, two bathrooms and a small family-kitchen, and eventhough the furniture is not the newest so far, everything was in great condition and really well maintained and clean. Overall the best hostel-experience throughout my whole trip !

  • Liked — The people who run it were so friendly, and a great view from the garden / terrace over the bay !
  • Disliked — My bed was a bit old, but still o.k.

We've just returned back to Australia after spending a month touring around Ireland in a rented car. In the West of Ireland everyone we meet were telling us that the Aran Islands were the place to go. So we went for two nights and stayed at the Artists Lodge Hostel. We had a magical time meeting all these interesting people such as the wonderful hosts Marion and Steve. We found them really helpful The hostel is also right next to a fantastic traditional Irish Music Bar which was really handy.
