My husband and I spent 10 days in Western Ireland, and on our last day (May 16, 2013), we decided to fly from Connemara Airport to Inis Mor, Aran Islands (only 8 minutes, and highly recommended). We hopped on a free bus ride from the airport to the center of town. Immediately upon arrival, we met John and accepted his offer to tour us around the Island. Knowing that this would be much easier than walking or riding bikes (we weren't dressed properly), we happily accepted and paid the 25 euro per person.
This turned out to be one of the highlights of our entire trip. John was wonderful and he and his horse Lara (Laura?) toured us around the island, where he pointed out dozens of historic landmarks, ruins, churches and more. We learned about the local culture and history of the "native" people. The island is gorgeous with stunning views of the ocean, rolling hills, ancient stone walls, pastures of sheep, the seal colony and more.
Mid-way through our trip, we stopped at the base of the trek up to the cliffs. John waited patiently while we grabbed a quick bite to eat at the cafe and then ventured up to the top of the cliffs for breathtaking views (more photo opportunities!).
John was great about pulling over to allow us to hop out and take photos at any time and answered all our question. He offered comfy, warm blankets (it was very windy, but sunny) and even an umbrella, just in case.
We highly recommend that you seek out John on your trip to Inis Mor. He is one of only a few remaining Pony and Trap Tour operators. So, don't miss out!
