“Weekend away”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 27, 2013

We went for a weekend trip. Great location, the view is stunning, overlooking the natural harbour and pier. It was so relaxing. Jean and Andy made us very welcome.
Internal handrails would be helpful as I have trouble climbing stairs. The rooms could do with a bit of a make over but I would stay again.

Just spent three nights here and had a great time. The setting at the harbour is beautiful and very relaxind. Andy and Jean were great hosts and made our stay memorable. The accommodation was great and the service was very efficient , but most of all very friendly. I will be going back next year.

My wife, daughter and myself recently stayed here. The location is very good, with a great view of the beautiful harbour and rocky coves. The hosts, Jean and Andy are very pleasant and helpful, although a little difficult to find at times. The rooms are tired and slightly depressing and would be in need of a good makeover.
The breakfast was ok, with the usual cereals and cooked fry on offer.
I had originally booked two nights with the option of staying for another two so we were all glad to be moving on. We found another B &B not far away, which was excellent.
I made the mistake of using Bunbeg House's own booking agent, Gulliver travel, instead of booking.com so I paid quite a few euros more than I should.

My husband and I stayed at Bunbeg House this past weekend for 3 nights. When we booked our stay, instead of booking online we called because their website said that was the best way to get a good deal. We booked their special offer of 3 nights for E115 per night which is what is stated on their ‘Rates’ page on the website. We thought this was a great deal because it was cheaper than the other hotels and B&B’s on the main street, which we expected, but we would have rather saved a bit of money instead of being on the main street and closer to everything.

We called the day before we were to arrive at Bunbeg House specifically double check what the total was going to be so we were sure to bring along enough money. It was once again confirmed that the deal was still on for the 3 nights for E115, and that that was the total. For that price, I can understand the run-down, outdated rooms. However when we checked out and were told it was E115 PER PERSON, not total as we were previously told, that’s when we begin to have some complaints!

When we arrived at Bunbeg House, it was situated in a beautiful location, right on the harbor. This however was one of the very few positive aspects of our stay here.

The carpet was absolutely disgusting. There were huge stains everywhere and it made you not want to take off your shoes. The rooms were a decent size, but very standard (which again for E115 we weren’t going to complain about, but for double that price, the rooms should have been very nice!). The quilt on the bed was old and had stains on it so we took it off and never put it back on. For the bathroom, the owner told us that to get water pressure in the shower we had to pull a string that was hanging from the ceiling. Fine with us, however when we went to take a shower, the pull string was broken so we had barely any water pressure. The towels in the bathroom were on their last leg. They were falling apart, strings hanging everywhere, holes in them, and they were very thin. Nothing was supplied in the bathrooms either except for a bit of hand soap. We had to go out and buy shampoo.

On our second night there, at around 11:30 pm a very loud alarm/buzzer went off in our room. We figured it was a fire alarm so we got up quickly and threw on some clothes. When we opened the door there was no one else to be seen, so obviously the alarm only went off in our room. Later that night we noticed a horrible odor coming from the bathroom. It smelled as if the sewers were backing up, combined with a very musty, mildew smell. It was very late so we closed the bathroom door in the hopes that the smell wouldn’t permeate the entire room. Luckily by the next morning the smell was gone.

Breakfast was very good all three mornings, however it seemed to be very unorganized and busy. There was only one poor girl who was actually working, taking orders, cleaning all the tables, and serving.

As I stated before, for the price we booked the room for, we weren’t expecting a 5 star hotel. We would have been fine with the outdated rooms for the E115 price. However being lied to about the total price two different times (when we first booked and when we called to confirm the price), then finding out that the price was double what we originally thought, this B&B was definitely not worth it! The owner was also not very sympathetic to the problem when we checked out. He said it was stated online that the price was per person. Sadly we didn’t have our phone with us to show him his own website where it never says such a thing, so we couldn’t argue with him about it at the time. We also never received a confirmation since we booked over the phone so we didn’t have written proof that we were told it was E115.

We checked a few other hotels and B&B’s around the area to compare prices after our stay and we could have stayed on the main street for less than we stayed at Bunbeg House, we would have had much nicer rooms, and we wouldn’t have had to walk half a mile every time we wanted to go into town!

Overall we were VERY disappointed in our stay here and we would not recommend this B&B to anyone for these extravagant prices. Stay somewhere on the main street instead where you’re closer to all the attractions!

My wife and I used this B+B while in the area to see an Irish folk concert in an nearby area. Some may think this place to be quirky , eccentric or off beat.I`m afraid I thought it old and antiquated. It has a nice location, beside Bunbeg harbour but that was as good as it got. It is around 3/4 mile form the village which itself is miles from anywhere. The building is made up of numerous floors and annexes in a way I had`nt come across before. The rooms are decorated in the style of the 1980`s with a slight unidentified aroma.
Breakfast was served by several staff members who seemed to be overwhelmed slightly on the morning we were dining.
All the above would have been fine if I had booked this place at a discounted rate but unfortunately I have had better rates to stay in good hotels.
So while the landlord and his family were very friendly etc, I won`t be rushing back here any time soon

Room Tip: Hard to say

Just had an overnight stay and I can't understand some of the comments on this site. Yes the rooms are average but very clean and meet all your requirements ie clean, comfortable bed, spotless bathroom and ample room for your bags. The hosts were lovely- nothing was too much trouble and they took the time to chat and help with queries. They do not do evening meals but state very clearly that this is the case and do offer suggestions where you can get an evening meal. This is a lovely laid back place where you can go to watch the salmon jump on a warm summer evening.

Set up from Vancouver Canada, looked at the pictures and thought this is the place. Easy of booking and a very warm arrival by both Andy and Jane made my wife and I feel very much at home.
Beautiful setting and close to the town and beach an easy walk to all. With the help and direction of Andy we were able to see things that we did not expect. Simple but clean rooms excellent food and good service was found. Quiet and subdued.
I suggest a walk with your better half down the pier just before sunset and talk to the fishermen on their boats...
Overall a wonderful experience for us both.... thanks Jane and Andy....

Room Tip: ask for a room overlooking the harbour.....
