A night at Ballymaloe is one of life's luxuries but before recommending to a friend I would describe the experience. The house is furnished with thought with several dining areas. We stayed in the lovely green room in the old house. The grounds are worth exploring with a lovely area with hens, ducks, peacocks etc. We were pleasantly surprised by the friendly nature of the staff who always remembered who you were and what you had been doing. But do not go expecting a London Michelin experience. That's not to say that the food wasn't delicious because it was (how cabbage soup can be so tasty was a revelation). This is home local country cooking of a stratospheric nature, all taste and portions with only a slight nod to pretension. Friday night's buffet starter was delicious. We were offered extra portions of cod/beef after the main course and if we hadn't been starting to wilt (because of ample portions) we would have accepted. The cheese trolley and dessert trolley had lovely food and you were encouraged to try everything. That's without describing the coffee and petit fours (4 of them including home-made marshmallow with raspberry, delicious). They do get quite a lot of tourists during the day but it never interfered with our experience. Breakfast was the best I have ever had, an amazing fruit muesli, porridge like I have never had and that's before you get to the cooked items. Go to Ballymaloe but go for the Ballymaloe experience. If you do, you will surely be amply rewarded
