“Brilliant as usual”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 17, 2013

We have just had a two night stay with a couple of friends, we had a fantastic time with the best weather ever. The outdoor pool was georgeous as was the sea at Shanagary.
The beds are really comfortable with top sheets and Irish foxford blankets and beautiful quilts, I hope they never change to duvets.
It was our fifth time staying there and it was great to see lots of the same friendly and helpful staff again. The food and service is second to none, everything grown and made there.
You can wander through the veg and fruit garden, and go and visit the pigs and hens.
The music and sing song on sat night in the drawing room is great fun we cannot wait to go back.

Enjoyed every minute of our stay from the lovely warm welcome to chatting to Myrtle Allen as we were leaving about her 50 years in business. We did not stay in the main house but in the converted stables.Room was only a minutes walk to the main house. It was very luxurious and we even had our own porch to sit in and read while enjoying a coffee. The food may not be the most adventurous but it was delicious and the meal is served at a pace you dictate. Service was very friendly .There was no wi-fi or tv in our room just a Bose system that needs updating but it just helped us relax. There is wi-fi in the conservatory of the main house. We loved Rory Allen's sing song after our meal with two delicious pints of Murphy's stout.Breakfast we disagreed on,I thought it was bland but my better half loved it.Maybe it was a little journey into the past and a gentler way of life but this just adds to its charm.

Great location with first class restuarant. The cost for two nights with dinner on one night was in excess of 600 euro so we wanted our stay to be special and it was in every aspect. No doubt helped by the sunny weather that made the location feel more like Provence than South West Ireland. That allowed us to use the outdoor swimming pool !

I have had a 2 night stay here during their high period. I can't begin to describe the charm and ambience. It is an absolute delight and possibly one of the best places I have ever stayed. It is a gracious country home set in a gorgeous rural setting yet not too far from the city. The decor and style are perfect for such a country home, beds comfortable and rooms large, bright and charming. The food is to die for and the staff helpful and friendly. The breakfast alone makes the rate more than good value. I will definitely be back but for longer so I can take in their nearby cookery school.

Room Tip: I had the Grey Room which couldn't have been better

We stayed for 2 nights in April 2013 in a very comfortable room with, unfortunately, silverfish in the bathroom. The room opened on to a lovely garden which, if the weather had been good, would have been wonderful. The disappointing aspects were the service and the food. The food was uninteresting and slow in arriving. Shoulder of lamb is not an expensive cut but can be tasty if well cooked - this was not. The most interesting aspect of the meal was the cheese!! Breakfast was a cooked breakfast with the fresh fish on offer being that same as the previous evening (on both occasions) and someone has put a whole sliced banana (not separated) into the apple compote -not good on the eye. For anyone who does not take sugar in tea or coffee, the amounts of sugar added to the breakfast food was too much. Whilst tea was on offer when we arrived, this cost €6 for one person on the second day. Given that there were no tea-making facilities in the rooms, this is not what I would expect of a hotel of this standing.
The venue was lovely but food, and its presentation, in Ireland has greatly improved over the years; my view is that Ballymaloe has not kept pace with this improvement and is living on its past reputation. Not worth two days out of our holiday.

We have been here several times and enjoyed our stay immensely. The food is out of this world, and we are real foodies so we don't say this lightly. However, there are very few amenities that one would expect given the price paid for the room as well as dinner. For instance, there is an outdoor pool which is unheated and the sort of standard you would expect to fine in a poor 4* hotel. The bathrooms are ok, just about passable but wallpaper is peeling and upholstery fraying in the rooms. On balance a beautiful place with delicious food but I think over priced and trading on its reputation and name. You can only do that for so long without people realising you are up to something.

I have stayed at Ballymaloe House five times in the last 20 years and it is still wonderful after all this time. Quite a lot has been added - like the Cafe at the back of the shop and the Grainstore where musical events are held. The rooms are so cosy and Ballymaloe House is the perfect place to relax and unwind. There are wonderful walks, a swimming pool if the weathers is as beautiful as it was for our stay, croquet, and a visit to Ballymaloe Cookery School and it's gardens is a must.
The staff are attentive and as accomadating as ever and the spirit of the place that drew me to it all those years ago lives on. I cannot recommend it highly enough.
