“See lava, go for rain”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 16, 2013

It is an interesting spot and never the less take time to read the pamphlet, its more fun than walking all the way to the crater. Tip; take a taxi from Masaya for $10 to drive you all the way up. Its a 6 km walk on the paved road with hardly shade. Be sure to bargin with the driver and dont be satisfied with the first if he won't go for $10. When it rains or has just rained, the chances are good to see lava during the day time.

“Volcano up Close”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 15, 2013 via mobile

Supposedly this is the only active volcano in the world where one can drive right up to the crater. It was slightly active when we visited, thankfully just smoking, but no lava was visible. There is a very interesting visitor center that is worth going through before you go up to the crater, and you have to stop there to register anyway. There is a low wall next to the crater at the parking lot for safety, but you can see over it easily. If the fumes are blowing towards the parking lot when you are there, do not stay for more than a few minutes as they are aggravating to the eyes and lungs, and are more noxious than is represented there. There are hiking trails around the craters, and an old lava tube with a bat cave to visit also; we did not get to see that due to seismic activity while we were there.
If you are at all interested in Geology, this is a must-attend.

“You should definitely stop by!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 30, 2013 via mobile

We were on our way to granada and decided to stop by and it was totally awesome you can see an active volcano. And if you are lucky enough and take the night bat tour (that is not always open and requires a reservation) you may be able to see real lava!

“An Amazing Ecoturism Experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 29, 2013

Live first hand an active volcano, an awesome night tour, a visit to a batcave, an ancient dormant volcano that is home to thousands of parakeets birds. this is a Must see adventure while in Nicaragua and only about 10 minutes away from Masaya City center.

“Just a crater and a pretty view”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 28, 2013

Don't break your necks trying to get here. The view on the other side of the area, across from the volcano and overlooking the laguna was beautiful, but the crater itself was filled with gases that just looked like smoke.

Apparently it's a toss up as to whether or not you'll be able to see much or just fog. It's pretty cheap, and if you don't have a car you can pay for transport that leaves every hour pretty much.

Nice and probably more worth the visit once they open up the other sections of the park (the guard said only one was open at this time because of a small eruption a few years ago).
