A great place to relax, read, and take it easy. Beautiful scenery. There is a fresh body of water where you can swim get a nice tan and kayak (kayaking free). You can get food from a variety of restaurants along the shoreline but I recommend visiting the Silva family's restaurant and ordering the fajita de pollo con gallo pinto y tostones. The restaurants are literally 10 meters away. You can also get fresh food made for you at the hostel. There is all night security and there are 2 well trained german shepherds that provide security and a good porch buddy. I lodged in a private room with a shared bathroom and have no complaints. I took Spanish lessons with an instructor in the area named Donaldo who is fluent in both Spanish and English who is very personable and a great educator. What is really cool about this hostel in particular is that the money I spent there went towards the NGO there which is also called the Peace Project and they help out the children of Apoyo with English instruction and other workshops. Overall, just great vibes from the place. Say 'Hi' to my monkey friends in the trees I miss them. oh and if you have a caffeine addiction the coffee and tea is free and its organic to the region

Laguna de Apoyo is one of the most beautiful places in Nicaragua, and staying in The peace project hostel was an amazing way to experience it.
This special spot is the home of an amazing group of volunteers that works with the children and the community of the Lagoon. This ppl are the spirit of the hostel, with their good vibes, they will make your vacation not only meaningful, but also so much more fun!

My mother and I traveled to Nicaragua over November 2012. We arrived not knowing what to expect, and left considering it one of the best trips we'd ever been on. The girls working at the hostel were extremely helpful recommending restaurants, attractions, coordinating transportation and serving as translators. We spent thanksgiving there and were thrilled to share dinner with the other hostel visitors from all over the world. The Laguna there is a little known gem that rests directly across the rode from the hostel, with beautiful blue water and rare aquatic life. We felt very welcome and by the end of our one-week trip, the hostel already felt like home. The local employees cooked some delicious staples for us like gayo-pinto and friend plantains. We also got to visit the local school and see all the great work the Peace Project has done with their students there. We were in awe of the wonderful things the project has accomplished; teaching the children english, completing recycling projects, educating them about wildlife and pets and how to care for them- though the community there is poor everyone we encountered was friendly and helpful. Some of our favorite activities included watching sea turtles, visiting the beautiful playa madera beach, visiting a cloud forest, coffee plantation and bat cave, taking a boat trip through the isletas de grenada, hiking around an active volcano and shopping at local merchants. The scenery was beautiful, the weather was perfect, and the lifestyle was relaxed and simple. It was an amazing trip that I would love to take again.

My wife and I stayed at The Peace Project Hostel in April and had a fantastic experience! The hostel is literally steps from the Laguna(the cleanest body of water in Nicaragua). Dorm rooms were standard but very clean, food was amazing, plenty of hammocks and wildlife including howler monkeys on the property, free kayaks and innertubes for the Laguna and the bilingual staff were friendly and super helpful! On top of all this, it is the most affordable place in the area and proceeds go to help the community via The Peace Project...really can't recommend this place enough!!
