A very inexpensive animal park to visit. Main building is outdated, but other updates are happening gradually.

“a wonderful day for the family”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 26, 2013

We visit Bays Mountain Park several times a year & there is always something new to experience. A deer approached us the last time & we fed him crackers. The barge ride on the lake is great, the trails are very nice, the museum is interesting - & most of it is free. It's definitely worth your time. You can bring a picnic lunch & make a day of it!

This is a great place to visit if you like being out in nature and seeing animals that are native to the area. Also the planetarium is very interesting. There are lots of trails to hike for all level of hikers. Look at the website for all of the activities and special programs.

“A great short walk or all-day hike, great planetarium!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 25, 2013

This is a quiet, great day in the park. The largest city-owned park in the state of Tennessee. You can spend from a couple hours to an entire day. Walking amongst the local animals (deer, river otters, wild cat, wolves, snakes, owls and other birds on display in relatively attractive settings are fun, especially if you have kids with you, but adults can enjoy it also, especially if you are not from this area.

The hiking trails are great. There is a 2-mile hike around the lake that can be done in an hour or two if you are walking at a leisurely pace. Very little elevation change, lots of different microclimates (cedar forest, hardwood forest, beaver swamp/pond, riverside, lakeside). An attractive, easy walk, any time of the year.

To spice up the walk around the lake, you can detour up to the fire-tower, or other routes that lead up to the ridge line trail. Nice views, and if you climb to the top of the fire tower, you can see to the ends of the earth (well, close...).

There is an excellent (recently refurbished with new optics) planetarium with great 30-60 min displays ($4/person older than 6 yrs old). An excellent herptarium (snakes) allows visits to view and even handle the snakes during ranger presentations. There is a nature center (sort of a museum about local habitats and animals) to visit. Most of the displays are a little dated, but still informative.

You can take a barge ride on the lake with a ranger to give a narrative on various topics.

There is a small fee for entry to the park, but it is only $4/vehicle to cover parking.

“Bays Mountain Park”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 25, 2013

There are miles of hiking trails,,mtn bike areas, picnicking, and a boat ride on the lake, plus the deer to pet,,some of the animals (wolves) has passed away recently in the outdoor animal habitat.
Also the observatory with the really nice telescope has very educational programs viewing the stars in winter.
