“Cute, authentic Memphis BBQ”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 1, 2012

We ate here prior to the Liberty Bowl. Any time you go eat in the South and they call you "honey" or "darling" you know it's going to be a good experience. This didn't disappoint. I don't eat pork but the rest of my party loved theirs, and my turkey BBQ was very good. The homemade BBQ chips and the cole slaw were especially notable. The sweet tea was great. It felt very down home.

It was also cheap, with large portions if you get the sandwich platter. The only downside was I asked to have them put on the Kentucky/Louisville b-ball game but they kept it on football. :)

This place was great, I'm just rating it 4 stars only because it's not exactly a gourmet kind of place.

“Barbecue Perfection”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 1, 2012

There is a lot of barbecue in Memphis, let me just start by saying that. There is barbecue everywhere. There are famous barbecue places such as Corky's and Charles Vergos Rendezvous, fast barbecue places like Tops, and then there are hidden gems like the Germantown Commissary. The Germantown Commissary has good ribs and great barbecue pork. The staff is very friendly and welcoming- they treat you like family. Their caramel cake is also extremely rich and delicious. If you ever are in Memphis and looking for a yummy barbecue experience, please go to the Germantown Commissary. You won't regret it!

“BBQ according to taste:Coconut pie that is absolutely fabulous”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 31, 2011

As with major full meals everybody is looking for a particular taste that suites them. As with hotels everyone has their opinion of what is needed and/or required for their stay or meal. Because the South specializes in a particular bbq, in which many people love, we each have tastes that are required to be fulfilled and satisfied to complete the meal. The Germantown Commissary is no exception.Luckily the menus are at your table underneath the tabletop glass.

I agree with the previous reviewer that the bbq at the Commissary is good to very good. I'm not a rib person but a pulled pork, brisket, chicken person. I felt the pulled pork, compared to other places I've been throughout the South, was excellent. Unlike other restaurants where you might get a large part of fat with your pulled sandwich or plate at this restaurant none of that occurred on either my plate or my son's.

Where I felt the Germantown Comissionary excelled was the desserts. The banana pudding and coconut pie were absolutely phenomenal. These two items alone are worth making the trip out here and why I gave them 4 stars rather than 5. I've tried coconut pies throughout the globe, including the South Pacific, and this pie is by far the best one I've ever tasted.

For questers with children in tow the kids menu is up to age 8 but most of the food is family friendly if you are reasonable with their needs as well as yours. Any of the sandwich plates come with enough sides that you can switch if you need. As for the dessert what couldn't be more kid friendly as banana pudding. It may not have been calorie friendly but kid friendly it was. Because my son pecks at food throughout the day I would recommend to come hungry.

“Good food but not as great as they tell you”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 11, 2011

This is one of those timeless places that hasn't changed much since it was first built in your grandfathers' day. It's small, crowded and while they have good food, it's not as great as some claim it to be. The place does get busy in the evenings so they try to move you through quickly. The parking lot is tiny next to the restaurant but there is more parking at the church lot across the street. If you have to wait for a table, you'll be getting friendly with the folks also competing for space to pay their bills as well as order and pick up from the take out counter. The wait staff service is so so - some good ones, some seem indifferent but the people at the to-go counter (which we often used) were always fast and friendly. I thought the ribs were on the dry and chewy side - our favorite was the pulled or chopped pork sandwiches. Good cole slaw, good potato salad. Fabulous banana pudding and if you like coconut macaroons you must try their coconut pie. If you are going to be in the Memphis area it's worth trying but I'd sample some of the other BBQ places to find the one you like best.

“Friendly staff and great food”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 28, 2011

Ribs were not fall off the bone, but they were still excellent and flavorful. We had a large group on the evening of a holiday weekend, but still managed to get sat under an hour. It is not a huge place, but tables were spaced sufficiently so you were not dining with strangers either. The host and sever were both friendly and accommodating.
