Let me start with the GOOD first! The menu items even though moderately limited, offer a good range of traditional food. The pork chop is excellent...salmon is very good...trout almondine good as well (very very thin filet), crab cakes:excellent (but in comparison, over priced without a side included). Salad bar is very good and very fresh. Chicken is good, Steaks are good but not exceptional (after trying several, we decided to eat steaks elsewhere). They have good seafood specials (but pricey, again in comparison to high end restaurants) Basically, the food is good but the following experience(s) are on going and aggravating. We had an experience at the Belle Meade restaurant (many many years ago) with a surly waiter and so did not go to Sperry's for a number of years...about 5 yrs ago we received a gift certificate and gave it (the Cool Springs location) another try....we have been going back since. When we started going we were informed that happy hour was 4-7 with half price drinks (we ALWAYS eat in the dining room and the happy hour was in both bar and dining room). In the last 2 years we have noticed fairly often that our check included full priced drinks...upon asking about this, the server has always had the bill adjusted, but with several different 'reasons'...the first being " happy hour is no longer in the dining room" (but the very next visit, it 'was' in the dining room again)...next "oh, we can't extend happy hour prices if you are using a gift certificate" WHAT IT THAT ABOUT??? Meaning if we give gift certificates as Christmas gifts, our friends will be told the same thing when they try to use their gift???? At Flemings, Mortons, or ANY other restaurants...their gift certificates are the same as cash (scratch Sperry's for gift ideas this year). We eat there several times a month and it had been several months without any of this wishy washy business when we went last week. Same thing...."oh we don't do happy hour in the dining room anymore". FINE make a STANDARD policy and stick with it...a restaurant has to do what they must to stay in business in these hard times (they raised the price of the pork chop $4 in the last year as an example)....but let it be CONSISTENT...we chose where we eat by (1) food quality and variety, but also consider overall value (compared to restaurants of the same category) and that includes factoring in a mixed drink (or 2!)....everyone knows that liquor sales are good money makers for an establishment (and theirs are NOT big pours) When you pay full price for drinks with lots of taxes heaped on top it adds substantially to the overall check amount....so when we select Sperry's it is with the expectation of happy hour drink pricing. Again, the food is worth going for (not a 'bargain'...but not exceptionally high considering the inclusion of salad)...but be aware of the inconsistencies regarding drink pricing and the use of gift certificates.
