I looked forward to eating at MacK & Kate's because I heard the food was excellent...and yes it was. However, I have mixed feelings about the overall experience. The hostess was very pleasant, and we were seated promptly at our reservation time. The decor was like an upscale Cracker Barrel. Some old barnwood graced the bar area, and antiques were plentiful. The chairs were comfortable, but reminded me of ones around my grandmother's table...not what I expected from a restaurant with fairly high menu prices. It took over 20 minutes to get our drinks and place our order. I got the feeling they were either short staffed or there was mass confusion because they tried to deliver our food order (which one dish was wrong) before we got our salad.
Now to the good part...while we were waiting for our order, the waiter brought a couple of biscuits with a delicious lightly whipped butter with a hint of strawberry...very tasty. I could have eaten that all night. We ordered the $11 wedge salad, and it was not a wedge but rather a chopped salad. It was good but a tad sweet...reminded me of the ribbon salad at Saffire but sweeter and without the crunchy pieces. The Lobster Mac & Cheese arrived, and it was tasty; although, not nearly as good as I had hoped from all the other reviews I had read...basically just very rich mac and cheese with a little lobster in it. Best of all was the Butternut Squash Risotto with shrimp...it was outstanding. It had a few vegetables in it a really great combination of flavors. I highly recommend it. Dessert was tempting, but I had no room...maybe next time.
Overall, they need to work on the service, and the food was good but not worth the $100 pricetag. I'll probably go again in a year or so to try the summer menu since they change it according to the season.
