I visited Clark's Bakery twice in the last week--first time, on a whim, and second time, because it was soooo good! I had read about it as a "foodie" tourist site, but really didn't know what to expect. There's barely a sign on Rt 127 south of Dunlap, and when you drive on Stone Cave Rd, you really are wondering where you're going. A small sign points to the bakery on a large property, and you really are wondering whether you might be in the wrong place. More small white signs point to the bakery in an unassuming 2-story building with only 3 parking spots. Enter the little shop and you are at once taken by the variety of homemade breads and cookies. You can look past the cash register and even see the Clark's making their breads. There's a plate of samples to try, and it's difficult to decide which you'd like to take home (so be prepared to get one of each!) The fruity fruit cake is dense, best savored in small bites--this cake you will not want to share. Flax bars are slightly sweet and delicious. As they do not use preservatives, it is recommended that you freeze your sliced bread and toast as you need it. They also have granolas, waffles, personal pizzas, and other organic items. The Clarks also provide shipping if you are an out-of-towner, or check the handful of locations that stock limited items. Fortunately for me, I will get to their Stone Cave shop monthly. There's nothing more wonderful than enjoying a still-warm sprouted wheat round loaf on the drive home! Cash/personal checks only. Closed Sat, but open all other days.
