“Closed for Maintenance”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed July 31, 2013

Saw Wild Turkeys and Deer on the way in but Lake is very low and closed for major maintenance. Nice for a picnic but not much for the kids the day we went.

“Little bit of everything!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 25, 2013 via mobile

Stopped here as we passed through Chattanooga. Cavern was great...very interesting! We bought the combo ticket which allowed you to tour the cavern, pan for gems and go cart ride. Go cart track was small but my 7year old son and husband had fun! We found lots of stones in our gem bag. It took about 2 hours to do it all. I would reccomend this!

“A must see!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 22, 2013

I'm so glad that I read the reviews about places in and around Chattanooga to discover. This was definitely tops! My husband and I took the car all the way up the mountain and it really was like we were on a different planet. We were the ONLY people up there - like our own private mountain. The view was breath-taking! The drive up/down the mountain was just as scenic. We spent about an hour or so down at the bottom just taking some pictures and talking with a couple of local fisherman who were more than happy to tell us about the area. Again, I'm so glad I paid attention to what those who traveled before me had to suggest!

“Breathtaking views”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 8, 2013

A real "out in the sticks" experience only 15 minutes from the city center. Wind up Elder Mountain Road and turn left to the TVA stored pump facility which pumps water from the river at the foot of the mountain up to the mountain top at night and then releases it to generate electricity during peak load times. When the mountain top lake is full, it's a beautiful drive or bike ride (miles of trails to ride on) with picnic areas and a beautiful overlook over the Tennessee River Gorge, the office of which houses the history of the Racoon Mountain Dam and Lake as well as how it generates electricity. Racoons abound, hence the name Racoon Mountain. Also visable are the raptors (eagles, hawks and turkey buzzards) along with abundant wild life like deer and squirrels. A pleasent ride and visit.
