“Great place to eat with excellent beer near the aquarium.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 15, 2014

We really enjoyed our lunch. It is kid friendly and has enough variety to make everyone happy. I had the salmon salad. The beer is terrific. The service was very good. I would recommend it!

“Big Flavor - Food and Beer”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 12, 2014

This place is huge inside, with a couple of big bars, big TVs all over the place, several big dining areas and pool tables, and a big sidewalk dining area complete with some small and narrow bench seating a level up from the street level tables. This is where I sat. It is perfect for a single person on business who wants to take advantage of the weather and people watching, but doesn't want to be the only one at a table for four.

Unlike most brewhouse/restaurants I've been to, Big River brews an excellent Pilsner and serves really good food, not just fried pub grub. I had the blackened chicken salad - a big assortment of fresh greens and veggies with a quartered hard boiled egg and topped with perfectly seasoned and seared, juicy blackened chicken strips. My compliments to the chefs who can prepare not only this dish perfectly, but a few dozen others on this BIG menu. Every plate that went by looked really good. The salad (served with fresh, warm bread right out of the oven) was $11.50 and the beer was either $4 or $6. Not the cheapest place for casual dining, but definitely worth it.

“An interesting building with its own brewery”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 8, 2014

The Big Rive Grille and Brewing Works is in an interesting old building which was originally a stables, then a tram shed and then about 20 years ago it became a bar. There are three distinct sections - a formal bar, a dining area and an informal bar with pool tables. They also have two other enterprises - round the back is Rhythm and Blues, a music venue, and their seafood restaurant, the Bluewater Grille, is next door. They had six regular beers and some specials on when we visited. We didn't eat there but the beers we tried were quite good.
