“Could be better”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 24, 2012

THe bedding was indeed nice. The restaurant help brought four rolls for a table of five. Didn't put ice in half glass of tea when served. Otherwise the fried catfish was fine, although pricey. ASking the maintenance where a major Chattanooga attraction was got only an "I think its around here somewhere " response" and the checkout documents were incorrectly notated, correct price, but wrongly written. Its a nice place but a hotel operator should run it

It may be old and it may be a little tired but the charm and lure of a night on the great Delta Queen is a mighty lovely one. And your staying on one of America's living treasures. I highly recommend it and I also recommend championing getting the Delta Queen back on the river steam boating once again. She needs to be under way again and you can help. Go to beautiful Chattanooga stay and then go home and take up her cause.

This was quite the adventure. Let me begin with the positive....very relaxing, no tv, or radios in the cabins, good restaurant, did I say relaxing???? Well, now for the "could have been better"...first lower your expectations as it is not a luxury hotel, it is old and reflects the era of it's day a little too much for my taste. The upholstery was very old and torn. That period fabric can be found very easily and the chairs repaired. King Deluxe cabin was small but doable. The air conditioning was controlled somewhere other than the cabin and we were very warm. I can't imagine how July and August would be. It was interesting and we were glad to have experienced it once but I'm not sure we would do it again.

Room Tip: We had a lobby entry on the first floor. The 2nd floor rooms were outside entry. On the first floor...

We used a groupon coupon last week to stay at the Delta Queen. The deal included a room, a "bottle of wine" and two souvenir glasses, a $25 voucher toward dinner on the boat, and a box lunch to use while sightseeing. First of all, we had to remind them of the wine. They told us that they were out of wine glasses, and that they'd just get the wine for us right now. He returned with two of those tiny cheap, plastic, screw top individual bottles of wine. Kind of funny!

The room itself was delightful. Wear and tear, and yes, tiny, and my husband had to crouch beneath the shower nozzle, but we didn't care, we understood that we were on a river boat and expected no less. It was lovely being on the river, too.

Then, that night, we decided to use the dinner voucher. I strongly urge people: do NOT try the Paddlewheel restaurant! The service was slow and incompetent. The waitress forgot completely about us, apparently, because after we were seated, she never came to take our order. Finally we had to give our order to the bartender. The rolls brought to the table were undercooked, partly filled with liquid dough, but when we brought this to the waitress's attention, she said "sorry" but didn't bring more. It took forever for our food to come out (and after it came we had to ask for silverware, please), and when it did, it was really mediocre, not worth the price. My scalloped potatoes, for example, were dry and seemed a few days old. Inedible. We really regretted not just using our voucher on a couple of drinks and then going somewhere else for dinner.

That night we sat in rockers looking over the river, drinking champagne, and it was really, really nice. We slept well in the cozy bed. Breakfast was...meh. Nothing to write home about, but okay. Weak coffee, weird orange juice, rubbery eggs, buffet lids that didn't hinge so that everybody struggled to both manage a lid that had no place to set it while dishing up their food. One guy dropped the whole thing on the floor. But there was bacon and sausage and the pastries were fresh and the waitress was attentive.

At checkout they seemed surprised by the mention of the box lunch (that we tried to get on day 2 but were told that it is given for the ride home only--at odds with the groupon description) so we had to wait a bit.

But overall, we were really pleased with the experience of staying on a historic old boat on the river. Until we saw the charge for taxes when we got home. We were charged much higher than we should have been, so I called and was assured that they'd credit $60 and change to our account immediately. This was a few days ago. Still no credit to the account. I just called again, and am waiting on a call back. They just seem, in general, to be disorganized. It seems to be run by kids who don't care a whole lot, to be honest.

Even with all the problems, though, I would recommend giving the place a try, with the following caveats: don't eat in the restaurant, check your bill before you leave to make sure it's accurate, and don't sign up for any special "deals" (such as the promised romantic bottle of wine with two Delta Queen glasses waiting for you in your room). But for an unusual and charming room in a great location on the river, if you're not picky about roominess and room perfection, give it a try!

We had such a wonderful experience onboard the Delta Queen Hotel! The history just envelopes you as you step aboard this 1927 authentic paddlewheeler (which is docked as a floating hotel and lounge in Chattanooga.) Yes, the rooms are small (I say they are historic and quaint) but the trade-off is that you get to experience something that is completely unique and one-of-a-kind. The staff was helpful and the location was spectacular. We were lucky enough to stay onboard when they had live music going on which only added to the fun. We highly recommend a stay onboard or at least a visit to the lounge and restaurant. Be prepared to step back in time!

Room Tip: If you can book a room in the "Betty Blake Lounge" you will find the amenities a bit more...

My family stayed for 2 nights. Both the adults and my child loved the experience. We loved the authentic rooms and experience. The rooms were updated just enough to make them comfortable and up to date without removing the riverboat charm. The views from the deck are priceless. The included breakfast was great, and we found the staff in the dinning room to be very gracious and helpful. However, our experience on the second night ruined our entire stay. We had a glass of wine while watching the river and went to bed about 11pm. It appeared that the bar was closing. However, we were awaken at 12:30am by a very loud group of clearly drunk young people singing, screaming and arguing in the bar. The boat is small enough that if you scream at one end, you hear it clearly at the other. I called the desk to complain only to be told without apology that there was a private birthday party going on at 12:30am. It continued until after 3am and only stopped after repeated calls to the desk. The whole family was kept awake from 12:30 to 3:30 am without even an apology. The boat is too small to be both a hotel and an after-hours club. I don't know how often they rent the place out in the middle of the night, but I would suggest asking when you make a reservation that no such party is planned.
