“OK place, next to gas station and convenience store”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 11, 2013

We had weekday brunch here because it was convenient to the interstate. The restaurant is actually part of a gas station/convenience store complex so if you're travelling it's a good place to take a break, gas up, get some food and supplies for the road.

The salad bar is small but good and well-tended. Mixed greens, cut fresh veggies, a handful of dressings, and a half dozen "sides", like pasta salads, pickled herring, cottage cheese and flavored mousse. The portions are small so the turnover is pretty quick--nothing appears to have been picked over or sitting out for too long.

The steak and eggs were good but the steak was cooked more than the medium rare I requested; still decent, though. The menu states they don't do eggs sunny side up, which I thought odd. Baked potato came with sour cream at no extra charge. Prices were reasonable.

The service, like others have noted, was less than stellar. The "seat yourself" concept means that you could be sitting for quite a while before you get a menu (as we were).

All in all, the place is not terrible--the locals seem to like it. It's convenient and clean and the prices aren't bad. It beats the chain restaurants any day in terms of food quality and cleanliness. I'd stop again.

“Awesome Iced Tea”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 17, 2013 via mobile

My experience was actually several years ago. We were traveling all day & since someone had recommended The Grainery we stopped in for a mid afternoon lunch. Food was good & service was adequate but I will never forget how good the iced tea was. I had to find out what they used & how they made it. The waitress said it was an iced tea concentrate that is prepared by using an urn (probably restaurant equipment). I think it was the Luzianne brand of iced tea. Anyhow, it was iced tea heaven for me. We are traveling the same route in a few weeks & I am looking forward to our stop to dine there again!

“Terrible service - never going back”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed June 17, 2013

We went to The Grainery for Father's Day. They had a buffet. Our waitress didn't tell us when we got there and ordered that the buffet was ending in 20 minutes. Each person got half a plate of food and the buffet was empty. We then were informed that the buffet was ending in 15 minutes and that they would not refill the buffet. Waitress had us order other food and charged for both the buffet and the other meals. We asked nicely what could be done since we didn't get even one buffets worth of food and were told nothing could be done. We were charged $13 per buffet plus everything else. Horrible service. After being treated like that will never go back.

“very good service”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 16, 2013

We had dinner here on the night of our stay in Watertown, South Dakota and found our server to be very attentive, and the food to be hot and filling.
