“A great place to stay & meet new friends”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 18, 2011

This was the 3rd year in a row I've stayed at Buffalo Chip. Keep in mind that this place is HUGE! Yes there are outhouses that smell, but there are clean flush toilets in different locations as well. Yes, sometimes the showers run out of hot water, but this year, I had 6 hot showers and 1 luke warm shower, it appears they have fixed the hot water situation. I personally ride my bike 1000 miles and sleep in a tent. I'm not looking for the Hilton when I get to Sturgis. This is a great CAMPGROUND with sufficient facilities for the tens of thousands of people who stay at The Chip. The music is first rate, not for everyone's taste, but they try and get a good variety of acts. You'll never go hungry or thirsty at The Chip. What else can I say? If you ride, make sure the Sturgis Rally is on your bucket list and visit The Buffalo Chip when you are there! If you can't handle a bit of roughing it, then maybe trailer your bike somewhere else!

Room Tip: Show up early for the best camping spots!

Thanks for taking the time to comment on your positive experience at the Sturgis Buffalo Chip. The Chip’s crew does it’s best to insure the thousands of campers and visitors at the Chip enjoy the Authentic Sturgis Experience. They are working toward a goal of having a year without a single negative comment and are getting very close. The toilet crew particularly received a lot of compliments for improvements this year, so it’s a challenge to hear there were issues somewhere. Please let us know where and when that was observed so it can be better addressed in 2012. As for the lukewarm shower, the crew is at this moment building two new boilers for the North and South shower houses so Chip goers won’t again have to rely on independent contractors. Hey, thanks again for bringing this to our attention. It’ll help make your 4th party an even better event in 2012.

This was our 4th time staying at the Chip and again, we had a great time!
The Chip is not for the faint of heart - do your research before you stay if you are easily offended. We are tent campers and camp out in the far north side near Bear Butte. Camping that far out away from the noise helped us get some sleep, but be sure to bring ear plugs as the party goes ALL night.
This year I was disappointed in the cleaning of the outhouse bathrooms - they weren't cleaned at all. In years past they at least got hosed down. The pay bathrooms/showers are worth every penny. The bathrooms in the concert area area always very clean though and aren't too far away.
The Chip usually has the best concerts around - Kid Rock was incredible this year!
Buy the "early bird" pass as soon as you can. Once concerts are announced the price goes up and up.
Overall, the Chip is a great place to camp or just visit for the night

Room Tip: Buy your pass early!

Thanks for the 5 star rating and for reviewing the Sturgis Buffalo Chip. The Chip’s crew works all year to prepare the physical plant for a perfect event to be enjoyed by all who attend, whether they are campers or merely stopping in for a concert, and they love hearing that their efforts have been appreciated. The toilets were a problem in 2010. The toilet contractor’s crew was from Florida and simply left without notice. The Chip’s crew picked up the project and found new help upon learning of the problem. The new replacement crew of about 40 workers did a wonderful job in 2011.

The Chip’s crew takes great pride in their efforts and always welcomes guests’ comments. It not only validates their collective efforts, but it also helps everyone know what to do still better next year. They heard you and the number of compliments received about the cleanliness of the toilets and showers in 2011 was unprecedented. They’re now building additional showers, boilers and water heaters, insuring 2012’s event will be even better for all who attend. ‘

We stayed at the Chip for the first time in Aug. 2010 (tent camped). We were there for six nights, and learned this is NOT the place for us. Words cannot begin to describe the disgusting conditions at this "campground." We watched grown men who looked like hardcore bikers come out of the toilets retching and throwing up from the smell. People were tying shirts and bandanas around their face to use the toilet. I think anyone who has used a port-a-potty or outdoor john expects it to smell bad...but honestly this was unlike anything we have ever experienced. The showers had no hot water on several occasions, so we were really glad we brought our own. We pulled in the first day and saw some pay showers and toilets set up near the entrance to the campground and we wondered then why anyone would pay $7.00 for a shower and a couple of dollars for a toilet when there were free facilities on site. You should have seen the lines to these pay toilets and showers on the second and third days...after experiencing the Chip's free facilities you can see why people pay to use a clean toilet and for a hot clean shower. I honestly don't think they limit the number of people they allow to camp here. It's literally jammed person to person for miles and miles. It doesn't seem like much money goes back into upgrades here. I would call the facilities minimal at best. Don't stay here if you want to get any sleep. We brought earplugs and Tylenol PM and it didn't make a dent in the noise. There are motorcycles revving their engines all night long, and the early risers start firing theirs up around five thirty or six in the morning. People hoot and holler most of the night, and there is music coming from different camps at all hours of the night. There is VERY little shade, so if you are tent camping be ready to evacuate your tent by seven a.m. at the latest, as the sun becomes blistering hot quickly. There are dirt roads everywhere, so be prepared for a coat of dust the whole time you are there. Make sure you have any and all supplies you need because it can take up to an hour just to get out of the campground at peak times...there are that many motorcycles trying to get on the highway at the same time. The only advantage to staying here was not having to travel to attend the concerts. (But we are not huge drinkers so it probably would not have been a big deal for us to drive back to a different campground had we stayed somewhere else. ) I will be the first to admit it was a mistake on our part to stay here. Now that we have tried it once, we will never stay at the Chip again for several reasons....1) We are not huge partiers....we might enjoy a couple of beers but don't usually stagger around drunk through other tent sites looking for our own tent 2) We like to get at least four or five hours of sleep a night 3) We enjoy clean, functioning restrooms and showers 4) We enjoy shade and grass. I'm sure there are tons of people who stay at the Chip every year and love it. Good on em...different strokes for different folks! As I said, it was definitely our mistake to stay here, but this review is for travelers who have similar needs to ours and who might be considering a stay at the Chip. Save yourself the money and the hassle and stay somewhere prettier, quieter, cleaner, and calmer. The Chip isn't for everyone!

Hi schulzecrew, Thank you for taking the time to put down your experience and I'm sorry to hear that your camping experience was not as you expected. We listen to our guests comments and continue to work and to invest time, energy and money, year around on our infrastructure and on how to improve our operations for our guests.

We are continually addressing how to handle going from a small town of 3,000 to over Half a Million People over a matter of days as smoothly as possible and appreciate your feed back.

Mostly thank you for having been a guest of the Buffalo Chip and we do hope you will join us for some shows and other activities we put on, because quite frankly, we work very hard and truly hope and believe that people do have the best times of their lives and make some of the best friends they've ever had at the Legendary Buffalo Chip. I can honestly say I have.

The camping area around the Black Parrot had major restroom problems. They never attended to them. Best they would do is board up the only restrooms the bar had. The next closest portipotty was more than a block away. The showers had no hot water and were dirty. What a shame as the entertainment and fun were top notch.

I'm really sorry to hear about your bathroom experience in 2010. We, the crew at the Chip, work very hard all year around to try to make your experience as flawless and enjoyable as possible. Every year it is our aim to make it better and more enjoyable than the last. We have a full year-around operations crew working to make physical improvements to the grounds so that we can make it better each year for our customers who come for the Worlds Largest Music Festival in Motorcycling.

We also have a full time crew that attends each bathroom area during the rally, they stand out front with their cleaning supplies and clean the restrooms as guests leave, and have a pumping service by one of the worlds leading waste companies: Waste Management. The restroom by the Bikini Beach (Black Parrot) pond was not supposed to be used and in fact was not even supposed to be there. I had it boarded up when I discovered it had not been removed like it should have been. It was a major over site on our part and will not happen again. I apologize.

As you can imagine it is quite the challenge to suddenly accommodate from zero to tens of thousands of people over a ramp up period of a couple of days, however we believe we can make your experience an enjoyable one.

In 2010, Unfortunately ONE of our shower house boilers blew up in the middle of the rally. We did manage to find a back up from a rental company, which as you can believe is difficult type of thing to find on a moments notice when half a million people are in town. We are taking precautions and obtaining new boilers so that this won't happen again.

We do thank you for being our guest and we hope we can make your experience better next time. We value you, every guest: The People are what make the Best Party Everywhere just that: The Best Party Anywhere!

I am 50 years old and decieded last year that I want to try something new and exciting. I have always like motorcycles and decieded to attend the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in Sturgis SD. We stayed at the Buffalo Chip Campground and I would like to say that it has EVERYTHING. Food, Camping, Entertainment, Activities for everyone of every age. We would ride during the day if we felt like it and then come back to camp to participate in the nightly concerts. ZZ TOP was my favorite but there were 10 days of great music so everyone was happy. The campers have everything they need and the food there was outstanding. We ate at the Pitchfork Fondue and it was just a great time. I will be going again this year and just can't wait.
