Walk the outline of the ship and see the items taken off before it was scrapped after WW II. Watch the 30-min. video inside. Free and interesting.

“Ship ahoy!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 1, 2013

OK, what is a battleship - sort of - doing in a park in the middle of Sioux Falls?

The good folks of South Dakota had a problem when the USS South Dakota went out of service. They wanted to have it in their state, but there was no obvious place to put it.

So ... they took some parts of it, and placed it within a cement outline that exactly matched the dimensions of the boat (as in 680 feet long). Presto - instant tourist attraction.

It does take a little while to recognize what you are seeing when pulling up to Sherman Park. But eventually, the purpose becomes apparent. There is a small museum/gift shop on the grounds. And it's free.

This is a nice enough tribute as far as it goes, but it's a short stop at best unless you have a strong interest in military history.

It was nice to see this place. We had read about it in the visitors guide and it was very close to the hotel we stayed at, within walking distance.

“World War II History”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 8, 2013

One of the most decorated battleships of WWII, the USS South Dakota Battleship Memorial is a great tribute to those who fought so bravely to protect our freedoms. The memorial is laid out in a manner that gives you a feel of the size of the ship. Along the grounds are various markers for the battles in which the USS SD participated. On our particular visit, they had just finished up with a tribute to the livingWWII sailors who were on the ship and it was great to hear their stories first hand. The inside of the memorial featurs donated photos, uniforms, etc. They are oddly laid out but that does not diminish the overall impact of the memorial. If in Sioux Falls and you are interested in history or the Navy, take an hour or so and visit the memorial, learn a few things and pay your respects.
