“Think Historic, Rustic, Charming!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 7, 2012

We can only echo what everyone else has written. The lodge is historic, friendly, welcoming, and charming. It is rustic. The rooms and bathrooms can be small, but the bedding is superb, and the FOOD. Oh, my, the owner, Carol, is not only a gifted cook, she is an artist in presentation. We did not want to go out one evening, so she prepared a delectable three course meal for us, served on a private table in the sitting room--gourmet quality with fresh, local ingredients. The meal was delicious and one of the best we had on our two week trip to the Black Hills, mountains, and Banff, Canada. Carol and her husband are so gracious and calm, carrying bags, recommending sightseeing. The lodge has a calming, Zen quality for harried travelers who've been driving too far in one day. This is not some cookie-cutter Ritz hotel, but it is a great place for authenticity and friendship.

Room Tip: We took the last rooms available, and they were two, sharing a bath. We took both because we had a...

I don't believe we could have found a better place to stay in the Black Hills. The lodge is very charming and has an interesting history. The location by a mountain stream and convenient to all of the area attractions while being close to Rapid City is a big plus. The service and attention from Carol and the staff was beyond expectations. The breakfasts were different each morning and very unique and special. Waking each morning and sitting in the great room in front of the fire and reading or talking to the other guests with a fresh cup of coffee was a great way to start each day. The bedrooms while small are very cozy and plenty adequate. Hisega Lodge is a winner and is where I will stay on my next trip to the Black Hills.

This lodge has a convenient location yet still quiet and quaint. Listen to the creek running by as you fall to sleep. The breakfasts are fabulous and will last you all day If you like historic and rustic, this is the place.

I first saw Hisega Lodge in the summer of 2011 when I was riding through the Black Hills. I met Carole and she showed me around the lodge. Unfortunately the lodge was full and there were no vacancies but I made a reservation for the following year. During the year I kept in touch with Carole (owner/inn keeper) as I counted down the days until my 2012 Black Hills vacation.
On a scale of 1 to 10 I rate Hisega Lodge at a 9.9. My only criticism is that our room was very small. The bed was wonderful and the shower was great...no complaints there at all. The night air was always cool and the sound of Rapid Creek was oh so soothing it made for great nights sleep. The overall ambiance of the lodge was wonderful, a true mountain lodge. The highlight were the breakfasts... truely gourmet. Carole and her husband Ken are wonderful hosts. I also need to mention that the staff that assists Carole with breakfast and around the lodge in general do a very good job at what they do. They all seem so happy that you are there and they go out of their way to make sure that the all of the guests stays are perfect. The lodge is about 10 miles outside of Rapid City which is perfect. You wouldn't want a mountain lodge on main street. The location is secluded but close enough to all the attractions and a few really good restaurants. There is even a laundrymat close by that is open until 8pm. You can drop your clothes off in the morning and pick them up later washed and folded. I dropped off a laundry bag full of clothes and the bill was less than $6. You get peace & quiet, cool air in summer, mountain lodge ambiance, gourmet food and wonderful appreciative hosts. I highly recommend Hisega Lodge.

The HISEGA lodge was perfect...a quiet and beautiful location, close to anything and everything you would want to see in South Dakota....it offers a historic lodge, an inviting great room, and a homey feel. Our room was a cozy with a king size comfortable bed and the view and sounds of the river flowing outside (we stayed in the Trout room)... all topped with an excellent and filling breakfast and wonderful company (the other guests). We stayed five nights...Carol and her staff went out of the way to accomodate my special diet, and despite her husband having injured himself the day of our arrival - she managed all her guests, the inn, and breakfasts with great aplomb. It was like staying at the house of a friend. The morning we left, we had to leave a bit earlier than breakfast time and Carol provided a great sack breakfast of hard boiled eggs, meats, fruits and muffins fous to eat on the way to the airport. Would definitely return and recommend.

Since every review sings the praises of Carol and Hisega Lodge, there is little of significance we can add, but ... this place really is special, so here's our two cents. The historical connection with Mount Rushmore is fascinating. Each breakfast is unique, the best overall we've ever experienced in a B&B. The common areas - porch, great room with roaring fire, library, eating area - are so inviting that travelers quickly become friends (no joke). The bedrooms are small (good beds!), but why would anyone stay in there when the Black Hills are just outside? We left for home after 5 days at the Lodge... The breakfast Carol handed us on the way out the door at 6:00 a.m. included fresh muffins, boiled eggs, apples, bananas, buttered bread, and a thoughtful note. We would recommend the Hisega Lodge to anyone. -- Jim & Faye, TN

If you are looking for an old lodge off the beaten track, this is the place for you. We stayed in the Ada room on the back of the lodge. It was decorated in an eclectic style... some old things... some new. The bathroom is tiny so if you are a large or tall person you may want to request a room with a larger bath. The towels were thick. The toiletries upscale. The bed comfortable. Breakfast was served family style. The food was delicious and plentiful.

Room Tip: If you think you'd like to hear the rippling of the stream from your room book a room on the fro...
