“Best in the West?”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 4, 2012

I have just returned from a 3 week "Wrinklies' Road Trip" (from Minneapolis to San Diego and back) with my wife and and my American relation; we are all in our 60s. We stayed in a variety of inexpensive motels, and cabins, all fine and free of bed-bugs, but this was the best.

This motel had a number of extras that made it stand out; extra services, such as the laundry; a wonderful view; personal service - the owners were making this a nice place to stay out of personal pride, not just running a business.

Go there - convenient access to the Black Hills and Mount Rushmore.

Situated high on a ridge overlooking Rapid City, the Big Sky Lodge offers a spectacular view. Rooms are clean and comforable, and the staff is very willing to accomodate any requests. There is a computer available anytime for the use of guests. In fact, when I needed to conduct an Internet search Jay, the owner, sat me right down and got me started. The location is excellent, with Mount Rushmore, Custer State Park, the Crazy Horse Monument, and Wind Cave nearby along very scenic routes. This proved to be a very worthwhile and economical stay!

Room Tip: Rooms on the back side are the ones with the wonderful view.

So glad I had not yet booked into the chain hotel we usually stay in when a friend recommended Big Sky Lodge. This awesome property is just over a mile away from that chain, but it's out of the 'city' proper and high on a hilltop with views of miles and miles of the surrounding landscape. The city lights at night are awesome from the hilltop.

Many many thanks to Elaine, Jay and Elisha for the warm welcomes, casual chats, sightseeing information, restaurant tips, etc. This is a 'mon & pop' place where you feel welcome and can freely chat with staff and guests. If you like rustic, casual, friendly (dog friendly too!), and economical - this lodge is sure to please.

We stayed in the single queen room. The double queens face the back of the motel where the view is, but we enjoyed the view in the evening from the benches by the hot tub. The room was very clean but fairly small. The bathroom was small, with the sink outside the bathroom. The water pressure was excellent, but the shower nozzle was low, not a problem for me, but my husband (about 6 ft. Tall) had some difficulties. :) The bed was fairly comfortable. There is a washer and dryer available for quests for just 3$ a load to wash and dry. The room rate was very reasonable and I wuyld stay again. The staff where all nice. The breakfast was average. The view, especially at night, was very pretty.

The owners and staff provided outstanding service and were very helpful with information about area attractions and activities. The setting is scenic, but still close to town for easy access to restaurants and shops, our room was clean and comfortable, and rates were very reasonable. We learned from conversations with other guests that many were repeat customers. Although this was our first stay, we plan to return and stay here again.

Trip across South Dakota another place we stayed was at Big Sky Lodge in Rapid City. The staff went out of their way to be helpful and make us feel welcome. The room was excellent, clean and the beds comfortable. Jay one of the owners made sure we had enough blankets as it got chilly that night. Breakfast included pastries, juice, coffee, bagels and fruit. The room cost us just under $70.00.

We found this motel using Trip Advisor, and were not disappointed. Except for thin walls in this older establishment, it's perfect! The owners are very welcoming, giving a tour as you check in. The view of Rapid City from their hilltop location is lovely, especially at night! They have a picnic area and hot tub situated overlooking the city. Our room was spacious and clean. The sofa was appreciated, too, as we plotted out our next day's touring. The extended continental breakfast was tasty...especially those little cinnamon rolls! Just the right size to top ff a healthier breakfast.

Room Tip: A room on the end gives only one shared wall, and one in the back allows fabulous views overlooking...
