“Small but excellent”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 6, 2013

Upstairs in a not-so-easy-to-find building on campus of School of Mines & Technology. Lots of full skeletons of long-extinct animals. Fine mineral and fossil collections. Nice gift shop.

“Surprising collection of gems - great place to go if the weather is bad”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 6, 2013

The Museum of Geology is definitely worth finding, and the free admission makes it even better. Having seen many gem and mineral collections, we were surprised by the quality and beauty of this collection. Visitors of all ages were enjoying the displays, even if they previously weren't interested in gems and minerals. Bottom line: worth a second visit!

“Amazing rocks and minerals”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 10, 2012

I recently graduated from SDSM&T and have gone to the museum several times. My nieces and nephews were very interested and best of all it's free. If you're in town go stop in and check it out.

“Can't go wrong with dinosaurs and shiny rocks”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 5, 2012

This place really is a gem. The displays are well done, the paintings are terrific, and it's easy to wander for an hour or so. There are fossils of dinosaurs as well as some of the ancient local mammals. My favorite is an innocuous-looking lump in one of the cases - a bit of fossilized owl pellet! There's a large collection of rocks and minerals too. I make sure to bring any visiting family here. It's small, but it's fascinating, and it's free!

“Geology is Fun!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 4, 2012

Friendly knowledgable informative staff.

The dinosaur displays included well categorized fossil remains. There were also excellent dioramas. The gems displayed were varied and impressive.

The gift shop items were lovely and very reasonably priced.

The young man working in the gift shop explained many geological facts about the area not just the museum.

We found that stopping here was well worth our time.
