“Great place to stay will in this area!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 2, 2012

My husband and I went with our 2 kids (12 and 9 years old). The cottage is clean and really nice. Jim and Marla are so nice...they make you feel at home. They helped with ideas of things to do and were so wonderful. The location is great and so is the price. There is a fire pit of hot dogs and smores and gas grill. I would recommend it!

My wife, sister-in-law and I stayed two nights, and we echo the other great reviews. Jim and Marla were knowledgeable and gracious hosts who were genuinely interested in doing whatever they could to make our stay more pleasant.

Our cottage (#1-Nautical) was not fancy, but clean, cozy, and, per my wife, cute. It had a mic and small fridge, no kitchen sink. The A/C worked, and the door and front windows (but not the back windows) open for ventilation. The bathroom was clean with shower only. We had a queen and a double bed, separated by a wall (no door), which were comfortable. For larger groups, there was a connecting door to the next unit. The Web site has good descriptions of the accommodation options. In addition to the cabins, there is an RV area and a small place for tent camping.

There is a common area in the center of the property with a fire pit, two gas grills, picnic tables and electricity. Charcoal grills are also available. BBQ tools are available on request (but they will probably bring them out before you ask). There is WiFi; Jim said it didn't reach to the far (i.e. our) cabin, but we did get a signal and were able to connect from the cabin and the BBQ area.

The location is great in a non-crowded and pretty area a few miles north of Hill City on US 16 (mile or so east of where US385 comes in). The Trip Advisor address says Rapid City, but that is NOT the case. Plugging the 12720 S. Highway 16, Hill City, SD address into my Garmin GPS got us right to the spot. It is about 10 miles from Rushmore, and convenient to sightseeing (Needles Highway, Custer State Park, etc.) and other activities.

Thanks so much to Marla and Jim for taking care of us in the Black Hills, and best of luck in the future!

Stayed at Whispering Winds for a weekend in June. It was an excellent location as a base for day trips throughout the Black Hills region. The grounds were beautiful, and the cottages were clean and well appointed. The relaxed atmosphere was welcome between excursions. Jim and Marla were great hosts--they treated us just like family.

A cozy cottage where Jim and Marla had definitely worked hard to keep it modern and convenient. They've thought of everything you might need, and if they don't have it, they'll tell you the best place to find it. Great advice on restaurants and attractions and a campfire to come home to in the evenings. It felt like meeting new friends. We will definitely recommend them to others and come back when we can.

The prices were the best! The rooms are extremely clean, and nicely decorated. You will never find a better place to stay. Jim and Marla give you a small town hospitality. Anything you could ever need they provided. Best part is the friendship they give to all that come. We stayed during memorial day weekend, Jim gave us the best spots to go to. Marla had everything just like a home. My kids were excited to get back to the cottages and have a fire. They even started to call it home.
Stay at the cottages is like visiting a friend. You will never find a better place to stay. Unless you like the uptight and fancy hotels. We will be seeing Jim and Marla again next year.

Room Tip: All the rooms were great. They are cottages so they are attached but I could not hear my neighbors...

Stayed 3 nights (Sept 9-12). Jim & Marla were very flexible with our travel plans. They made sure to ask our kids names and showed them where to find kid-friendly stuff. At the nightly campfire, they would not only ask us about our day, but would talk to the kids (ages 5 & 7) about the things they liked about our day. Marla even spent time looking at all the rocks they had collected! The cabins were very clean & comfortable! If we go back to the area, we WILL stay with them! Definitely would recommend them!

We camped and Whispering Winds has the best accommodations I have ever had while camping, nice shower/bathroom, free firewood, coffee in the morning, group fires every night... Jim and his wife are super friendly and willing to help you make the most of your trip. Definitely going back to stay in a cottage next time! Thanks!!
