“A Cut Above”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 27, 2013

Compared to other hotels and motels in the Mt. Rushmore area, it's definitely a welcome change. I wouldn't call it a luxury hotel but it's definitely boutique and upscale. Reminded me a lot of a European hotel - small room, tiny elevator, but very comfortable bed. Room did not seem to have any refrigerator/mini bar and not sure these are available on request but we could have used that for our water bottles and snacks.

Hotel staff was friendly and we enjoyed some of the amenities such as Vertex Skybar and 2 for 1 beverages at Seattle's Best in the lobby. Great location near shops and restaurants and airport is only a 20 minute drive away. Gave us an easier drive to catch an early morning flight home than if we had stayed in Custer or Hill City nearer to the main attractions of the area.

The parking situation is not as bad as some reviewers have mentioned. You can park your car in the loading area of the hotel for up to 1 hr so you can get your luggage out, take it up to your room and then move your car to the garage one block away. Also parking on the street near the hotel is available for free on weekends.

Overall, we enjoyed it and would stay again.

We were driving cross-country and stumbled upon this place in the middle of a live arts festival complete with art and food vendors, live music, and festivities for all ages in early June, 2013. LOVED it! It's the oldest, most historic and high-end hotel in town. Got an adjoining room for our two teenagers, and went out and about on the town to enjoy live music, beers, and art with the locals. LOVED the small urban vibe we found surprisingly funky in Rapid City, SD, and loved the way the valets and front desk handled the craziness with the festival upon our arrival--unflappable, great customer service in the heart of a very cool town at the gateway of the Mt Rushomore Natl Monument. You simply MUST stay here. And eat across the street in the morning or evening.you won't be sorry!

Room Tip: Higher floor.

We stayed 3 nights recently at the Hotel and were a bit put off by several things about the room.
We were on the 5th floor #503, with a corner room and wanted to raise the blinds to take in the views, however, the cords to raise the blinds were cut or missing. So we could only open or close the slats to admit or shut out light. The bathroom waste basket was not emptied once durng our stay because the same empty wine bottle was there each time we came back to the room. The tile and grout of the baseboard behind the bathroom door was cracked and dirty. Very cramped sink area. On the plus side, the Hotel was in a very good location, very close to 2 excellent restaurants and public play areas in Downtown. A huge plus was the Vertex Room on the top of the Hotel, with interior and exterior seating. We had excelent weather and sat outside all 3 nights for a glass of wine before dinner. Great scenic views and smart attentive staff who really knew how to take care of a customer!

Room Tip: Suggest the roomier "Executive Suite" as opposed to just a room. Not much difference in co...

This was my second stay at the Hotel, first was business and this pleasure. I enjoy the atmosphere and the sense of antiquity and the availability to down town locations. It also provided easy access to roads to the Black Hills and area attractions. Staff was friendly and helpful. I did worry about the block away parking for my motorcycle, but had nothing adversely occur. It is a historic hotel and visitors should be aware much has been done to modernize it, however it's limited 1920's space can only accommodate a certain amount of modernization. If you're looking for a resort this is not the hotel for you. If you are looking for a sense of history it works. One though, as indicated this was my second visit and for two nights I looked for the ghost and saw none.

Room Tip: It was nice and quiet on the ninth floor.

After making it a good way across America getting to the Alex Johnson was like finding an oasis in the desert. The place has a dignified class about it that somehow does nothing to take away from the easy going personal relaxation one looks for in a hotel. If you have a few extra bills to drop the roof-top restaurant Vertex has a menu sure to knock your socks off, with a drink selection to match. The staff is helpful and nice, the managers professional and attentive. The room was perfect through and through. Convenient coffee and bagel shop on the ground floor for the morning, and a pub for the evenings. Not to mention a nice stack of coupons they give you for everything at check in.

Our daughter suggested this place because she had stayed there. It was really well kept and I loved all the old wood. Our room was small but cozy and we had a nice view out our 7th floor corner window. They have a few restaurants but we choose to walk around this beautiful city to find something casual. I usually don't like to stay in Cities but this had lot of Parks around and a bronze statue of a President on every corner. You do have to park in a parking garage a block away.

Room Tip: The front or corner rooms have a good view.

An Old Hotel That Pulled It Out of the Bag!

The Alex Johnson is an old hotel that doesn’t wear its age very well. The first night was spent in a queen bed room. The room was very noisy. A heavy machine (perhaps a compressor?) cycled on and off all night long on about a 5 minute period. It was not terribly loud but a “throbbing” found its way into the room. The air conditioner was very loud and cooled the room quickly. Too quickly! The room would be toasty and then cold. It was not very comfortable. The room was very small. There was a desk on one side of the bed the doubled as a nightstand. There was a tall refrigerator/microwave cabinet on the other side of the bed that was too high for use as a night stand.

They moved us to a king sized bed room for the next few nights at no additional cost. That room was very nice. It was roomy and quiet. It was also nicely appointed with great amenities.

The staff were very helpful and pleasant. They went out of their way to make the stay as pleasant as possible.

Parking was free and was located 2 blocks away on the third floor of a municipal parking garage. The garage did not have an elevator and so I got a work-out every day. Valet parking was available for either $15 (so said the valet) or $10 (so said the front desk person) per night. Valet parking was reasonable but I like to know where my car is parked.

All-in-all the stay turned out to be quite pleasant.

Room Tip: Get the corner, King bed room. It isn't doesn't cost much more and well worth the cost. I w...
