“Very Nice and Unique”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 14, 2012 via mobile

The room was clean and quiet, even with a soccer tournament in town. The bar downstairs was friendly and accommodating with a good beer and liquor selection. Quite the history with the hotel, definitely the place to stay while your visiting Rapid City.
One suggestion would be to a avoid the restaurant on the top floor, it's not quite up to what they're trying to do. Small portions and an overly proud staff. The food was okay, but not top flight. JMO!

It is the only Historic Hotel in Rapid City and is conveniently located in the heart of downtown close to amazing shopping and dining experiences along with the new Main Street Square.

I couldn't believe we got a room here for under $ 70.00. We were hit with a $8.95 Historic Hotel Fee(?), but still a bargain nonetheless. The lobby is amazing. The room was nice with an amazingly comfortable king bed, but the bathroom decor was 70's cheap. This hotel was once a Sheraton but now is part of Choice Hotels. There is an skybar on the roof. There is a giant Seattle's Best Coffee and an Irish Pub on ground level. Food options are limited, but there are some nice restaurants around the corner. Parking is a block down in a multistory garage. The hotel is mentioned as the Sheraton Alex Johnson several times by Cary Grant in Hitchcock's North by Northwest but no scenes are shown in the hotel.

Room Tip: Stay here for the history. The lobby alone is worth a visit.

FYI. You sound like a movie buff so I will also let you know that Kevin Costner and his crew stayed here during the filming of Dances with Wolves and had their nightly recap meetings in the Jefferson Room.

I love a hotel that has a story to tell and where you feel that the building has character. I am burnt out on nothing special rooms in a box motel. When I heard about Hotel Alex Johnson I was jazzed. When we arrived and had a doorman, a happy receptionist, take us to a large, clean room with a king size bed, coffee maker, thick white towels (on the seventh floor) we were delighted. All of this quality, comfort and style, as well as a great price. I paid $79 AARP (tax inc.) here, and just the night before, at Comfort Inn, I spent $81 AARP (tax Inc) for a lesser room. For $79 there is good value here! It all was good until I had to find parking. The "free" hotel parking is a block down the street in a parking garage on the last level which is uncovered. I could only wonder what you would do if you were hit with a huge snow storm and you woke up wondering how your car is doing on the top of the roof. I drove my car to the parking garage and parked on level III’s very last space that was 50% exposed and 50% not exposed... I thought I was in the zone. The next morning, before 8am, on my windshield there was a $25 parking ticket for “not parking fully in the “uncovered portion.” Bummer of a way to wake up. That and the hotel has ZERO Breakfast options (Your options are: go across the street to a $12 breakfast OR go to Seattle's Best a get a coffee and their "frozen egg sandwich" microwaved for flavor. NO Decent BREAKFAST makes me to drop another half star. So from 4.5 stars the two hits brings it down to 3.5 stars. Conditionally Recommended.

Room Tip: Parking and Breakfast will get you ... Add $10 per for Breakfast and be prepaired to pay $25 in park...

We do have Valet Parking available for a small fee or free parking just a block away and the Seattle's Best Coffee shop located inside the Alex Johnson's does offer pastries along with their fabulous coffee.

We stayed at this hotel for a week as part of a professional reunion. This is a 1927 vintage hotel so the trade off is historic charm and a beautiful lobby for small rooms and reduced amenities. Our room was adequate but cozy for that length of stay. Generally we had no complaints about the cleanliness although the cleaning crew didn't always replenish the bathroom goodies. Twice hotel staff knocked on the door and a millisecond later opened it. We brought this to the attention of the front desk. Because of its vintage, there are no service elevators so it was somewhat annoying dealing with the hotel staff and all their stuff (tables, laundry, etc.). We liked that there was a Seattle's Best Coffee place in the hotel which was a good option for limited breakfast items and coffee. There are several very good restaurants as well as specialty shops within walking distance. Parking was about 2 blocks away in a public garage. We enjoyed the hotel and the staff was friendly and reasonably efficient.

At first it was ok, until we wanted to go to bed. A big stain is what we saw in the middle of it, accompanied by stains on the pillow cases. As we slept the heater was popping loud all night long. The next night we asked for a new room but was toldwe would have to pay for an upgrade. I told them i do not want an upgrade, i just want a clean quiet room. She then said i would have to pay for it. I looked at my wife and said i guess we wont sleep tonight either.

Thank you for taking the time to write this review. Once I was aware of your situation I had the front desk upgrade you and I have visited with each department head to insure this does not happen in the future. We strive extremely hard to insure that each and every guest to our property receives the highest quality service and products, returning home with a very favorable impression of the Alex Johnson. However, on occasion we fall short of the high standards we have set for ourselves and we appreciate the fact that you have taken the time to bring this to our attention.

We stayed on 7th floor. The room was probably one of the cleanest I have ever been in. For the first time in many stays, there was no left over hair on the bathroom floor, the one thing I always look for, since that is what gags ME! Bed was big and comfortable. Bathroom was very small but oh, well, how much time do you spend there anyway. We loved it. It was reasonably priced, parking wasn't the best, but we have had worse. Staff was awesome. Downtown Rapid City is a happening place. Lots of fine dining, boutiques. The Market Square had special events on Thursday night, things we didn't expect and had a blast doing. Black Hills local theater group played 4 blocks away. Special treat. We likely will use this hotel as our preferred stay in Rapid City, just cuz of location and access to everything. Also very solid motel, quiet.

Was so creeped out. Block windows; peeling bathtub in a creepy small bathroom; office ceiling tiles. Dirty and stains everywhere. We complained and were moved to better room. Still wasn't the greatest but way better than the first room. Nothing really felt clean. We just made up our minds to get through it; not exactly want you want for a vacation. Normally we love historic places but this place just feels out dated; like the feeling you get in someones old basement with a spare bed in it.

Room Tip: Go somewhere else.
