We ended up at the Holiday Inn Rushmore Plaza by chance when using Hotwire.com. We were initially quite pleased as the rate we got was way less than what one would normally pay for a hotel this nice.
The front desk staff was awesome and the layout of the hotel very appealing. The building is 8 storeys tall and the entire inside of the hotel is open and the rooms are placed around the perimeter. We could see the door of our top-floor room from the lobby. The room itself was nice although I'm surprised that it did not come with either a microwave or refrigerator.
The problems began partway through the first night. The day had been 40C (100F) and the AC was running full blast to keep the room cool. Evidently the cooling system failed in the middle of the night and the room became sweltering. I attended the front desk the following morning (what are they going to do about it in the middle of the night?) and learned that their system failed but it had been corrected.
We returned after another extremely hot day and found our room to be an oven. I found a maintenance man who tried to fix the problem without luck. He expressed annoyance with the front desk staff who evidently was supposed to have passed along to him all the room numbers that had experienced problems. It was well passed 11pm when we gave up on the staff and tried to go to sleep but soon there was a knock on the door by the night manager. He gave us keys to a suite where we could sleep in comfort. The suite was hot but the manager advised that he'd just turned on the AC a few minutes ago and it would be cool shortly. A few minutes later a gruff employee knocked on the door, thrust a fan at me and grumped, "Here's a fan," and walked away.
That fan saved our night since the AC still didn't work. We learned that after two sweltering nights, they'd finally figured out the problem was something to do with pressure not able to get the coolant to the top floor. The night manager had provided us with 2 complementary breakfasts at the Grille Restaurant on the main level as an apology (my review of the restaurant will explain why that wasn't adequate compensation).
Once they had the AC sorted out, we stayed two more nights and had nothing but a good experience from then on. It was, however, quite disappointing that two of our nights were ruined and that the compensation offered to us was inadequate.
