“It would have been great had the air conditioning not failed”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 22, 2012

We ended up at the Holiday Inn Rushmore Plaza by chance when using Hotwire.com. We were initially quite pleased as the rate we got was way less than what one would normally pay for a hotel this nice.

The front desk staff was awesome and the layout of the hotel very appealing. The building is 8 storeys tall and the entire inside of the hotel is open and the rooms are placed around the perimeter. We could see the door of our top-floor room from the lobby. The room itself was nice although I'm surprised that it did not come with either a microwave or refrigerator.

The problems began partway through the first night. The day had been 40C (100F) and the AC was running full blast to keep the room cool. Evidently the cooling system failed in the middle of the night and the room became sweltering. I attended the front desk the following morning (what are they going to do about it in the middle of the night?) and learned that their system failed but it had been corrected.

We returned after another extremely hot day and found our room to be an oven. I found a maintenance man who tried to fix the problem without luck. He expressed annoyance with the front desk staff who evidently was supposed to have passed along to him all the room numbers that had experienced problems. It was well passed 11pm when we gave up on the staff and tried to go to sleep but soon there was a knock on the door by the night manager. He gave us keys to a suite where we could sleep in comfort. The suite was hot but the manager advised that he'd just turned on the AC a few minutes ago and it would be cool shortly. A few minutes later a gruff employee knocked on the door, thrust a fan at me and grumped, "Here's a fan," and walked away.

That fan saved our night since the AC still didn't work. We learned that after two sweltering nights, they'd finally figured out the problem was something to do with pressure not able to get the coolant to the top floor. The night manager had provided us with 2 complementary breakfasts at the Grille Restaurant on the main level as an apology (my review of the restaurant will explain why that wasn't adequate compensation).

Once they had the AC sorted out, we stayed two more nights and had nothing but a good experience from then on. It was, however, quite disappointing that two of our nights were ruined and that the compensation offered to us was inadequate.

Room Tip: If it's hot outside, ask if the AC is working before you check in.

Stayed here for 2 nights in June. Great staff who obviously work very hard but the whole place looked a bit tired and in need of an upgrade. Room was clean although again could have done with a bit of a facelift. Took the breakfast buffet and not a lot of choice and nothing seemed to stay warm... It was as if they hadn't bothered to turn on the hotplates!

We stayed for two nights in late June.
This is a nicely situated hotel with a pleasant walk through a lovely park to down town.
I endorse what other contributors have said about the rooms. Ours was spacious and spotlessly clean. I also thought the the beds were very comfy. The hotel has an attractive central Atrium with glass sided lifts, this atrium contains the bar and restaurant on the ground floor.
The hotel hosts bus tours so can get quite busy.
I did like the large convenient, free, car park.
The staff are very helpful, but some can go AWOL. (see below)
All in all a decent place to stay and very handy for the sights of South Dakota.
I was not at all impressed with the restaurant. On Sunday morning at 9:30 a.m. we were pretty much ignored by the breakfast staff who were obsessed with putting out the brunch buffet. We were not offered a breakfast menu and were waved towards the, by then limited option, buffet. Juice and coffee took an age to arrive and our cups were dirty and had to be replaced with clean.
Monday morning the restaurant was very busy, the staff were rushed off their feet. We had great service from Savannah, who seemed to be doing several jobs at a time. I was more impressed with the menu than with the buffet. The cups were dirty, again.
I am surprised at this, because there are lots of restaurant choices in Rapid City, just a short distance away.
Bar staff were AWOL on both nights for 10 minutes at a time, so nurture your drink.
What is it with dogs and hotels in the USA? I love dogs but not when they are on the 6th floor and terrified of lifts.
So after that negative ending to my review I return to my title. This is a good place to bed down and use as a base for travel in South Dakota and to experience the many pleasures of Rapid City.

We appreciate your making the effort to share your experience with us. I want to personally apologize for the inattentiveness of our staff to you in the restaurant and lounge. That behavior is completely unacceptable. We strive to do better and be better. I am sorry that you received that service here at our hotel.

I also want to thank you for mentioning the great service you received from Savannah. I will make sure to pass it along and recognize her.

Thank you for staying with us and we look forward to serving you with excellence in the future.

Sincerely, Sherry Beck-General Manager

Very impressive from the moment you walk in to this beautiful hotel. Nice staff awaits you and checks you in. I would give the girls at the front desk a 10 for personality and that was appreciated. Got to the room and it was HOT>>>>>>>>. I like my rooms around 68 degrees and the coolest we could get it was around 75. I know it was 100 outside but I couldnt sleep due to being too hot. The morning breakfast buffet (you have to pay for) was marvelous and we even got a 20 dollar credit at check in to help out. If this place had better Air Conditioning I would give it a 5 star rating with not a problem.

Room Tip: Go when it is not so hot.....

Everything was good. No complaints at all--staff, rooms, facilities. Everything worked the way you would want it to. Very clean, quiet and comfortable. A pleasant walk through the park to get to downtown, which has some interesting shops and restaurants.

My wife and myself thought this hotel provided excellent value. The room was large, well equipped, modern and clean. The restaurant provided good food at a reasonable price. The staff were very helpful particularly the lady who provided coffee in the coffee shop adjacent to the lobby. Car parking was free and immediately adjacent to the hotel. Wifi was also free throughout the hotel. The hotel may not be in the heart of downtown but it is close and in our view is not a handicap.
