My seventy-three year old mother and I stayed at eight different hotels in fifteen nights, and almost all of them were fantastic (thanks in part to reading reviews from fellow travelers at TripAdvisor).
We stayed for three-nights at the Holiday Inn Rapid City-Rushmore Plaza starting on Saturday, July 29th, 2006. When we arrived at the hotel, we were very impressed with the lobby area and the waterfall. We were originally given Room 529, but when we entered the room, it only had one bed, and I reserved a room with two. When I went back down to complain, I was told the second bed was in the sofa. This was unacceptable, as I did not wish to sleep on a sofabed, as my reservations clearly stated a room with two beds. The lady at the front desk did not seem too happy, but managed to find a room with two beds. We ended up on the eighth floor in Room 811.
The room was nice and comfortable and very large, with three pillows per bed, a clock radio, a “comfy” chair, a desk and chair, a round table, and a large (fifty-plus channel) television in a cabinet with remote, as well as a beautiful view of downtown Rapid City and a park.
The medium-sized bathroom was functional and relatively clean, with three sets of towels, a hairdryer, and one bottle of shampoo. However, while the room was spotless, the bathroom fan was surprisingly quite filthy for such a posh hotel. Also, we found that the glass containers were only rinsed and not cleaned, as I could still taste the Listerine I used from the night before.
I made use of the Business Center downstairs, and was able to access the Internet through one of the computers, as the other one did not work. We found it strange that such a big hotel would only have two elevators, and we found that they were very slow and we always had to wait a long time to use them.
After taxes, the American Automobile Association room rate came to $137.11 U.S. Funds per night for three nights. We rated this hotel as the second best on our trip, but we still felt uncomfortable staying there. It was just too "high class" for us, and we seemed "out of place" at the hotel.
