“Nice Capitol, but disappointing”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 9, 2013

The web site says call in advance for guided tours during open hours. Monday to Friday 8 to 7 and Weekends and Holidays 8 to 5 pm.

We are trying to visit state capitols, because it tells a lot about the history of the state. I made a point to alter our trip - to include a stay in Pierre so we could do the tour. I made reservations a few months ahead to include a stay overnight on a Saturday. I called to schedule a tour in advance about a month before we left. I was told no tours on the weekends, even though the web site says differently. I mentioned to the tour office to perhaps they should take that off of their web site. I thought about not staying in Pierre, but we already had our hotel booked.

We did stop by the capitol, but most things were closed. When you have a guide, they are able to take you into some of the rooms. We have done tours of capitols and everyone we have been to have been offered on the weekends. The capitol was very nice. We did enjoy walking around the limited areas you could get to.

Yes you can get a printed out guide, but since many of the rooms are locked you are not able to see much.

I did enjoy the First Lady Gown Collection - they are small replicas that are made sometimes out of the same fabric of the exact material worn by the First Lady. It included historic information about each of the First Ladies since statehood.

Tourism for Pierre should see what they can do to get the tours back on the weekends. I just check the web site again, and it says to call ahead to schedule your tour and they are done during open hours. No mention at all that they will not do them on the weekends.

“Simply Gorgeous”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 31, 2013

This is one of the best State Capitol Buildings. The grounds are beautiful also with memorials by the lake. I recommend taking a walk around the lake and enjoying nature at its best!

“Worth a visit if you have to go to Pierre”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 25, 2013

A beautiful State Capitol Building in a pleasant residential neighbourhood with close by fairly modern, surprisingly unfenced Governor’s Mansion on the opposite side of a lovely lake. We did not take a tour as we have visited many other State Capitol Buildings but it certainly was on a par to some of the best in the Country. On the edge of the close by lake, there is an excellent War Memorial covering wars up to the present day and with superb sculptures of military personnel from WW2, Korea and Vietnam. We drove to the other side of the lake and were able to walk very close by the Governor’s Mansion, which is unusual in that respect as was the style, which was far more modern than is normally the case. It is worth spending an hour or so walking around the Capitol Building and nearby War Memorial.

“interesting state capitol”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 21, 2013

The paintings and terrazo floor are especially nice. I liked looking for the blue signature stones. I wish that there had been a tour guide, but the self-guided tour information was well done.

“Always worth a visit..”

The South Dakota state capitol building is a place to stop. You can pick up a guide at the front door and do a self guided tour. It is an awesome building and reflects the states history well.
