Owner description: Not your typical museum structure, this one is built into the side of hill, and much of it is underground. A contemporary version of a traditional Native American dwelling, this beautiful building features Native American (mostly the Sioux tribes) and pioneer exhibits, with many rare artifacts tracing the history of South Dakota.

“By far the best way to learn about the history of the west”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 17, 2012

I have been coming to South Dakota since I was a kid and have visited all of the tourist sites in Mitchell, Wall, and the Black Hills. This weekend, I finally took the time to visit the Cultural Heritage Center in Pierre. Wow! This place was informative and fun. Pierre is not right on the interstate but if you have the time, this museum is worth a visit.

“Cultural Heritage Center Covers it All”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 7, 2012

Excellent museum with a lot of different displays. The two most interesting things were: The original La Verendrye Plate. In 1743 it was placed on a hill in Pierre by 2 brothers who were sent from Hudson Bay area of Canada in search of a water route to China. They were among the first newcomers to see the Dakota plains. It lay undisturbed for 170 years when it was found in 1913 by a group of teens. There is a monument at the scene now with a fake plate. The 2nd most interesting thing was a Jefferson coin that Lewis & Clark had given to the Indians.

“Quiet and Educational”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 3, 2012

Very neat structurally! I like to go here esp during the Christmas season to see Santa and have our kids get photos. I like that there is something for adults and children. I really like the displays and atmosphere. I'm a reflective person and enjoy imagining life during those eras. Very nice.

Clean, variety of displays, small gift shop. Fun to see all the geese in the lots nearby.
