my wife an i recently stayed here for 2 nights and were very excited based on previous reviews. the setting is beautiful and spearfish canyon is one of the best scenic drives i have taken but we experienced some major problems at the lodge that were never addressed. i had made my reservation early in april and at the time was told the only room available was the burlington suite. unfortunately , i was not told that this room opened onto a meeting room and that there was a scheduled meeting early in the a.m. in the room. fortunately, there had been many cancellations and we were offered the custer suite, all be it for an additional 35 dollars a night. the custer suite looked fine until the next morning when we were awakened at 5:30 a.m. by the bright morning sun coming through the venetian blinds. the other rooms we looked into had draperies covering the window but apparently one of the most expensive rooms in the house didn't warrent having them or they hadn't been replaced. the evening before we had dinner at the latchstring restaurant at the lodge and i can only say that not only was my buffalo steak awful but the service in an almost empty dining room was amongst the worst i have ever experienced. since i did not wish to make an issue .as we were entertaining another couple we had met earlier in the week in custer at dinner, i waited until the next day to speak to the restaurant manager. the best he could promise was that breakfast the next morning would be fine. since we had no intention of subjecting ourselves to the restaurant again this was of little use. on checking out we asked to speak about these things with the hotel manager but she was unavailable, apparently dropping her children off at daycare. the young lady at the desk had no authority to do anything but promised that the manager would contact us via e-mail about our concerns. this of course never happened. i do not usually expect any compensations from hotels or restaurants and rarely complain but at the prices we paid at spc lodge and the numerous less than satisfactory stay i felt this shpuld have been considered or at the least addressed by management. if you stay here know exactly what you are getting, ask specific questions and eat elsewhere.

“Pick someplace else!”

We spent four nights at Spearfish Canyon Lodge. I had read many reviews and thought it was worth the stay. Honestly, we should have moved after the first night. Our room was fine, but that is about all I can say. There is NO elevator which means you have to schlep everything upstairs if your room is on the second floor. Also, during the time we were there, there was an annual family reunion as well as a wedding taking place at the Lodge. The family reunion folks were there for three of the nights we were there. The noise level was awful! Doors slamming, kids running up and down halls, banging doors at the hot tub area, talking in the halls at the Board Room hospitality suite. I spoke to the front desk mentioning the problem, but I didn't notice much reduction in the noise level on subsequent nights. On the third night of our stay, I asked our neighbors if they could keep it down; they just didn't realize how loud they were. Guests who are not part of a booked group should asked to be on another floor or down the hall--way down. Also, there is a cute little bear in your room. Get it away from the kids or they will want it for the price of $24.

Spearfish Canyon is beautiful for a drive, but it is too far from Mt. Rushmore, Badlands, etc. to be useful as a base of operations. Construction on the road to Lead is a problem. The Latchstring Restaurant is OK and the service must have improved since a previous posting. It was fine and the food we had was good. We didn't eat breakfast there though.

All in all, it is a nice place, but I wouldn't stay there again. Pick someplace else. I am not usually a whiner and can tolerate a lot but I was not happy.

“Beautiful and Relaxing”

This is a nice hotel with beautiful scenery! We had a regular room with two beds. The rooms were kind of small. The beds and linens were very comfortable. It is very quiet and relaxing. We have a 3 1/2 year old boy and there wasn't much for him to do . There is no pool but they have 2 hot tubs on a deck looking out over the creek. There are hiking trails, bikes to rent and horseshoes to play. In the wintertime they have snowmobiles to rent and I think that would be fun!
The restaurant across the road isn't that great. I had Walleye and it was very salty and dry. Breakfast the next morning wasn't that great either. I had an omlet and that was dry too. The problem with staying out there is that there is no other place to eat unless you want to drive 14 miles into Spearfish.
I think this hotel is great for couples wanting to get away for a weekend and relax. I wouldn't stay here again with my child.

“Idyllic but inconvenient location”

Just returned from a 2 week stay in the Black Hills and Badlands. Moved around to 5 different hotels in the area. Decided to stay at this hotel because of a post from a previous traveler. I did not want to stay in Deadwood and this sounded the best for Lead. I did not realize that it is way out on a small but picturesque road off the main road out of Lead. It is about a 25 minute drive from Deadwood and road construction made it longer. Convenient it is not for a quick turn around from Lead or Deadwood at night. I thought the setting, however, was gorgeous, with hikes to waterfalls and scenery used in the picture, "Dances with Wolves". The rooms were adequate but I peeked in a few rooms and saw suites that were much more luxurious. I was not offered any of these rooms and the rates were all over $200 a nite. For the price, breakfast was not included, which made the room very pricy for the area. The restaurant is across the road and on a very wet, windy night, it was most inconvenient, The food is adequate but the service is terribly slow, both with the ill-trained wait staff and the kitchen. A buffalo burger took 45 minutes to arrive. Guests were talking amongst themselves about how bad it was although the room is lovely. Allo in all, it was a mixed blessing.

“Average imitation of historic lodges”

Spearfish Canyon Lodge

We arrived and stayed in the lodge during two days of heavy rain and flooding.
This lodge is an average imitation of the historic Black Hills lodges, yet has neither the style nor the character of the classic lodges. It is more like a chain hotel layout attached to a common room/entry hall/lounge with the looks of a lodge.
The common room offers free wireless internet, plenty of seating. The fireplace is a fake gas fired, low heat not providing the comfort after a cold day outside of skiing or hiking.
There is a deck on the second level with two hot tubs, yet it was too cold for us outside to venture in the tempting steaming tubs. Tubs appeared clean and functional.
Our room was average with two queen beds. Lay out was reasonable and bathroom area average for two people. The bathroom is too small for four people.
Towels were fresh and appeared newer and plush.
Room finish is modern with a hint of Indian theme.
The wall unit for heating and cooling did not function as desired, just blowing air, not at the desired temperature.
The rooms were quiet, yet occupation level during our stay was low.
