“No Motel 8”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 19, 2014

I was looking over lodging in the Black Hills area for my wife and I to stay on her 60th birthday trip. She's a travel agent and while we do the warm weather climes in the winter we like to do a "see America" trip in the summer. We could not have found a better place to stay during our tour of the Black Hills area! The owners were most gracious and their love for their place could not have been more evident. The location fit the trip to a tee located up a hill, in the woods about a mile off the main road. As to the facility there was not a "hair" out of place. The breakfast they put out was nothing short of stupendous. We had driven most of the day from the Denver area through the plains in Wyoming. You would be hard pressed to beat the enjoyment of lounging in your hot tub on your private patio looking out onto the woods at the end of the day. Conveniently located nearby all the area has to offer. It was such a special place I'd give it six stars if it were possible. Don't pass this place by!

Room Tip: The location of the Turkish room was ideal.

Based on our friends' recommendations, we stayed here for a week in early summer. Lovely accommodations in a gorgeous, relaxed setting. Great Swiss-style breakfasts, helpful and friendly owners, and a perfect location for seeing all the sights of the area (Mt. Rushmore, Crazy Horse, Black Hills, Badlands, Custer State Park, Wind Cave, etc.). Would definitely stay here again if we come back to the area. One word of advice--plan to arrive for the first time in daylight, since the long driveway to Coyote Blues can be a challenge in the dark if you're not familiar with it.

My husband and I stayed here for a couple days while checking out Mt Rushmore. The B&B is conveniently located just off the main highway and beautifully situated up on a cliff overlooking woodland and fields.
The hosts were wonderful. You could tell how much they loved the area and made you feel welcome and at home.
The breakfast was AMAZING and my husband still talks about the coffee.

We stayed in the Lakota room and the Turkish room. The owners of the B&B were charming and helpful. Morning breakfasts on their porch with the other people staying at Coyote Blues were enjoyable. The location is beautiful and peaceful in addition to being centrally located to the sights around the Black Hills. We plan to return on future vacations, and would highly recommend this place.

We absolutely loved staying at Coyote Blues Village B&B and hope to make a return trip. We stayed six nights and were in the Lakota Room for 3 nights and the Turkish room for 3 nights. We loved the peacefulness of the property and the wonderful hospitality by the owners. The Lakota room had Lakota decor and an indoor bathtub for two. We enjoyed it, but were equally pleased with the Turkish room. The Turkish room was nicely decorated and had a hot tub on the patio, which we used in the evening. Breakfast was great and it was fun to meet other travelers. Christine & Hanspeter really have a wonderful place in the Black Hills.

Room Tip: Explore their website. They have pictures and descriptions of all their rooms.

This B&B is a nice place to stay with very friendly owners. The room we had was smaller than some in the house and without a/c. Not sure if they are all without a/c. You can certainly upgrade to a larger room with some having a private hot tub and balcony. If you are out and about during the day, not having a/c is ok. If you stay in the room during the day it could be an issue. The bed was comfortable and the room clean. Our shower was small but in good condition. There is no TV in the room which was actually, a nice change. Free internet is available anywhere in the house and easy to connect with.

There is a fun energy in the house when the owners and other guests up and about. Everyone looked to be in a good mood. Breakfast is not served all morning like at some locations so you need to be ready to eat at 8:30 AM. The upside is it was enjoyable to chat with our tablemates about where they were from and what their itineraries were for their stay. We picked up on some ideas of what to see and where to eat.

If you are allergic to cats there is one or two on site. If you like to keep your car clean this isn’t the place for you. Once off 385 which is the main road you need to drive about a mile or so on a gravel road to reach the B&B. On the upside, the gravel road is in incredible shape with nary a pothole to be found. Another upside to being off the beaten path is the quiet and scenery. No bus, trains, plane or car noise to think about. All you hear are birds, squirrels and the wind blowing through the trees and rustling grass. Ironically, we didn’t see or hear a coyote. Ahhh, quiet. It’s especially peaceful sitting on the expansive deck which overlooks a beautiful vista.

The B&B also has a large porch/deck, TV room and other areas you can sit and relax. The owners really want you to check in between 4 & 6:30 PM. No sooner, no later.

Getting to the site was not as easy as we would have hoped because the directions Google gave us were not entirely accurate. Taylor Ranch Road is off of 385 a bit further north of Hill City than the directions state. We weren’t able to hit everything in the area but Deadwood to the North, Mt. Rushmore and Crazy Horse to the South and Rapid City to the East are all within 30 minutes. The drive is idyllic in every direction.

The upside of this place easily outstrips the downside and if we could we would have extended an extra day.

It can be difficult to review a B&B, because you wish your hosts much success and all the best. Because my husband is French and I grew up in France, I was looking forward to staying in a home kept by a Swiss couple. I couldn't wait to sample the "Swiss breakfast spread" and looked forward to what I thought would be a wonderful mini vacation in South Dakota. The setting of the Bed and Breakfast itself couldn't be more beautiful, and the home is spacious and lovely and superbly decorated with art and souvenirs from, I am sure, the hosts' travels around the world. Sadly, we never were really shown around, nor invited to sit and chat. I know that summer is an extremely busy tourist season, and on top of that they had friends/family visiting, which I'm sure took up much of their time and attention. I would have loved, however, a little treat or cookie or beverage on the patio in the evenings... There were drinks, (soft drinks, beer and water) chips, chocolate bars etc. (for sale) by the front door, but that seemed impersonal to me. We stayed in the "African" room for the first two nights, which was a little of a squeeze for the 3 of us. The last night we stayed in the "Mediterranean" room, which was bigger and had more light and which we liked a lot better (except for the water pressure in the shower). Breakfasts were exactly as described on the web site, but I found myself longing for something a little more decadent or sweet, and am not a big fan of cheese and meat in the mornings. We did have some type of egg dish all three days, but always savory. The friends we made there raved about the fruit cobbler they had been served on the morning before we arrived, but sadly we didn't get to taste any of Christine's sweeter cooking. My husband, who is a tea drinker, but never makes a fuss about anything, was not asked if he wanted anything else when he declined the coffee being passed around. I guess the bottom line was that our stay was nice, but we were not made to feel special or pampered.

Room Tip: If you are traveling with children, the Mediterranean room is a good choice.
