“Hotel was ok, staff was friendly but not knowledgeable about local attactions”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 21, 2009

We stayed a two nights, we had to call to have towels replenished. The staff members were nice but they weren't helpful in regards to where to dine or any of the local attractions.

Can't say enough about this hotel. The most important thing for us when we are on holiday is location at a reasonable price. And this hotel is centrally located between Mount Rushmore, the Wind caves, Crazy Horse and Custer. Hill City is a nice enough spot to be with a mix of touristy shops and history--I would suggest the 1880 train ride. We flew into Rapid City, otherwise known as Rapid, and arrived very late at the hotel. Nevertheless the nice man greeted us and got us situated in our spacious suite in short order. Breakfast was fine with the typical morning buffet and off we went each of the three days we were there. Would have been nice to explore Hill City itself a bit more but we were generally out and about each day to see the sights. From here we travelled east to the Badlands and Wall Drug, south and west to Wind and Jewel Caves, and north and west as far as Devils Tower[no place to eat here, folks, so stock-up for this one] before leaving for our next vacation destination in Cody, Wyoming. Good times. I must add that there is a fun Segway Tour in Deadwood called Rushmore Segway that is the best thing going in Deadwood, SD, as far as we could tell. If you can set aside a couple of hours for a Segway stop here, it is well worth it...one of the highlights of a memorable family vacation.

September 2008.... We picked this hotel after reading other reviews. It was a good location. You could walk into Hill City. Definitely eat at The Alpine Inn. Well worth the price for the 6oz. $8.95 or 9oz $10.95 Filet Mignon wrapped in bacon. Free dessert on your birthday too!!!! We stay at alot of HIE Hotels and really I didn't think this one was quite as good as most of them on our trip. It was reviewed as pretty new...I thought it could have used alittle better cleaning and upgrading a bit. The room was okay but down hill after that...... I guess they had some people from another country in the room next door to us. I never heard any English. There must have been at least six adults staying in the room. I couldn't sleep. They were talking loudly all night off and on. To say the least I wasn't a happy camper. We were to stay two nights but I requested them to cancel the second night. They did and I made a reservation at Hot Springs instead. Now that was a new very nice HIE. Loved it. Much better nights sleep too. I guess it's all in what you want and if you get a quiet room unfortunately we didn't have a good room. Who wants to try to get a new room when it gets noisey at 12:00 at night after you are all unpacked and already been in bed for two hours????? Good Luck with your room.

Billy and the rest of the staff are great, they are all up beat and very helpful in regard to the local attractions. Great advice on what to do first each day to beat the crowds. Great advice on eateries, the Alpine Inn is a must in Hill City. My teenage daughter wanted desert one night and Billy gave her directions, called the Gas Light in Rockerville to ensure it woud stay open for us and provided a menu to preview. The hotel is pretty new and well cared for, the breakfast which comes with the room cost was great. Biscuits and gravy every day and cheese omlets on Sunday. It really was more like being at a B&B. Deer right outside our room window and pronghorn sheep walking down the street, the kids were thrilled.

My husband and I did quite a bit of research before choosing where to stay on our honeymoon. We thought a cabin sounded romantic, but weren't sure about them after reading the reviews. We booked the two room jacuzzi suite for the week. Since we reserved it well ahead of time in just out of peak season, we got a fantastic rate. (Cheaper than most rooms that are standard queens.) The room was absolutely amazing. Full kitchen minus a stove, a living room with fireplace, a separate bedroom, nice sized bathroom, jacuzzi area, and a loft that had another bed and tv. We never expected to be staying in a room that is technically bigger than our house. The front desk staff was very friendly and helpful, housekeeping was good, the room felt like home. The breakfast selection was adequate, and the room was very nice. The pool and hot tub were a little on the small side, but we didn't use it too much. Overall, we were more than pleased with our stay.
