Hill City is a real nice wild western down in the Black Hills of South Dakota. It is close to Mount Rushmore and Crazy Horse Monument.
Holiday Inn Hill City is on one end of the town, besides the towns only supermarket and other hotels. 2 block walking distance to historic Main Street.
It seems to be a new building, right behind the building is a steep hill with a street going up. Most of the windows in this direction of the building will have hardly any view than facing the grass of the slope or the street. The entrance to the parking lot is under construction right at the moment. There is plenty of parking around the hotel.
Lobby is a nice welcoming and rustically decorated place. Adjacent is the breakfast room with plenty of tables and chairs. Across the lobby is the indoor pool and hot tub, opposit the fitness room.
Our room was spacious with a nice comfortable chair and a desk with chair. It is Holiday Inn quality you can expect and rely on. They did not have wireless internet and we had no cable for our laptop, you need a cable to use their internet. There is no fridge in the room. TV had many channels. We got 2 beds welcoming decorated with silk flowers. The matrasses though were a bit too soft for us. Yes - it's true what another guest already mentioned in his review: there is an open bible on the desk.
The room was really quiet, doors could be closed quietly (only one person slammed the door in our corridor - indoor corridors of course). We were close to the ice machine but were not disturbed by any noise from it.
Bathroom looked brandnew with a curb shower curtain, tub and long counter and sink. Toilet in the bathroom, no extra sink in room. Nice toiletries provided and very fluffy towels. It was a quality place and we recommend it. They serve breakfast in the morning (with boiled eggs and omelets, meat and gravy, as well as oatmeal, cinnamon rolls, danish, toast, cream cheese...). Unfortunately no hot chocolate to be found...
Staff was very friendly and helpful to our questions.
Train 1880 is next to the hotel building.

My wife, 3 kids and I started a week long trip to Mt Rushmore and Yellowstone here at the Holiday Inn Express in Hill City and it was a great way to start our trip. The hotel was new, clean and the staff was very helpful with recommendations for dinner and other things to do in the area besides Mt Rushmore and Crazy Horse Monument.

I am partial to Holiday Inn Expresses because most are relatively new and most have very good free breakfasts for the family. This is probably my favorite Holiday Inn Express I have ever stayed in. Only 20 minutes or so from Mt Rushmore. If you are going to Rushmore this is hard to beat on price, location, cleanliness, and friendly staff.

The combination of a first class staff with the comfort of the Holiday Inn Express made for a wonderful stay. From housekeeping through the front desk and manager, the entire staff was interested in making our stay wonderful. The complimentary breakfast was great --- our favorite were the cinnamon rolls. Within easy walking distance was the grocery store, the train station, and downtown Hill City.
If you want to stay in a comfortable place in a small town with access to the Mount Rushmore area, this is a great place!

This was an awkward situation. My husband and I are both 'persons of faith', but it is a very personal faith for each of us. As we checked in to this hotel, religious hymns were playing softly in the lobby. Once in our room, the bible was laying open on the desk and printed scripture material was on the bed. Not what we would have expected.

The room was minimally furnished, more along the lines of a super-budget motel line. No comfortable chair or desk chair. No refrigerator or microwave. A few very inexpensive plastic flowers were scattered on the bed perhaps attempting a romantic atmosphere?

Although the hotel was almost empty when we stayed, we were not able to upgrade inspite of Platinum Priority Club status.

The breakfast bar was very sparsely provided. Yes, the famous HIE cinnamon rolls, but very little else of mention. No other hot items such as biscuits, gravy, and omelets so many other HIEs are now offering.

The price was extremely high and out-of-line for the value received.

As I look at the other glowing reviews, I wonder if we were even at the same hotel?!!
