“Too rustic for me!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed June 17, 2007

The positives: the price was right and the room (413) was comfortable. Mary, the proprietor, was very nice.

The negatives: it's in an old, musty building. The elevator to the upper levels is very old and small. Many of the rooms were undergoing renovation. The view was nothing to speak of unless you like parking lots. This is more of a Mom and Pop type operation.

  • Liked — price
  • Disliked — this establishment is very old and rundown for my tastes.

Thank you for your review. We are sorry you did not like the historic building. As you say it is not for everyone, but thank you for giving us a try.

Deadwood is a unique town with lots of history, gambling, and an array of hotels in and around the City. We opted to stay at Deadwood Dick's during a month-long trip of the US, and by far, it was one of the best overall experiences of our trip! The hotel is right in town, so park the car in the hotel parking lot, and enjoy the history of Deadwood (right across the street from the museum - must see).

Owners David and Mary are warm, witty, and accessible. Their hospitality added to the charm of Deadwood, and their knowledge of the area, restaurants, and attractions was spot-on.

Our room was very clean with a comfy king-size bed, large shower, and great views of the City. The in-room coffee pot with plenty of coffee was a great way to start the morning as we watched deer and birds from the sitting area of our room.

The old-fashioned two-door elevator is funky yet functional. There is a bar on property, a few slot machines, and several floors of antiques and books located in this former warehouse.

Must See Attractions: Kevin Costner's tribute to Bison, Spearfish Canyon Highway, Deadwood Museum, and Mount Rushmore. Dining: breakfast across the street from the hotel, dinner at the restaurant above Saloon #10 (walking distance). Avoid Kevin Costner's restaurant - the wonderful wine list can't overcome the terrible service and over-priced food.

Overall, we loved the hotel, the energy, and most of all, David and Mary's warmth and kindness at Deadwood Dick's - a MUST when staying in Deadwood! We'll definintely be back!

We booked our reservation online and received a confirmation letter in the mail. We read the TripAdvisor reviews and picked this place because we wanted a central location to everything. We were on our motorcycle this trip and wanted to be able to walk to everything. If you expect a Holiday Inn.go there. If you want friendly, knowledgeable people.this is the place. We stayed in the King Room. It was clean, quaint and comfortable. This is an old historic building with an elevator we haven't seen the likes of since Italy! We have stayed in 5* lodging around the world and know what to expect. This doesn't meet 5* standards.but we got exactly what we expected.Great! We would recommend for lunch; Jakes, Kevin Costner's place with his stuff on the walls from his movie wardrobe. Highly recommended for dinner; Deadwood Social Club above the #10 Saloon.5*.

Recently came back from Deadwood Dick's. This is a great hotel if you want the frontier feeling that this rough and tumble town had back in the 1870's. If you're looking for a new, modern hotel with all the conveniences, you might want to look elsewhere. The price was right and we had a room that actually consisisted of two bedrooms and a kitchen area. The place was clean but had a slightly musty smell to it. One bed was comfortable and one was soft and very uncomfortable (I got the comfortable one). The walls are a little thin and we could here the people next door. But overall we enjoyed our stay. However,I may opt for a different hotel with all the conveniences next time just to do something different.

My husband and I just returned from staying at Deadwood Dick's during our annual trip to Deadwood and already can't wait for next year. We started going to Deadwood shortly after gambling was approved many years ago and wouldn't miss a trip for anything.

Over the years, we stayed at several different hotels, but fell in love with Deadwood Dick's the first time we discovered them and now won't stay anywhere else.

The first thing we do after we park the car (literally a few steps outside of their door) is pull up a barstool and have a cold beer. Dave and/or Mary are always there to listen to us tell of our 12 hour drive from Wisconsin and how things are back there, no matter how many beers and trips back and forth to their slot machines that might take! Then we take our luggage up to our room in that wonderful elevator everyone talks about. (We even took pictures of it the first year to show our kids back home - it's that unique!)

We've stayed on the 4th floor every year and were upgraded to a large suite last year. The rooms have a nice decor and the beds are very comfortable with REAL pillows, not the flimsy little things in so many hotels. No matter which side of the building we've stayed on, there is always a fantastic view from their huge windows. The bath towels are plush and smell so good and the maid service is excellent and never intrusive.

Our favorite aspect of Deadwood Dick's would have to be the way we can sit at their bar and visit with anyone who comes in. Dave and Mary are so knowledgable about what's happening locally, it's always fun to glean all the information we can, so we know what to look forward to on subsequent trips. They can answer any historical questions you might have as well.

We treasure the historical nature of the town and have no interest in staying in a brand new ultra-modern facility with a pool, etc... If your interests lie more in that direction, then this probably isn't the place for you. But if you like to feel like you have stepped back in time and want to slow down your pace, then you must check out Deadwood Dick's.

We spent 3 days in Deadwood staying at Deadwood Dicks. This place is wonderful, it has 3 levels, of like books, antiques, lots of stuff to look at you can spend hrs. just looking around. The owners, Mary & Dave are wonderful people & we will for sure stay there again when we are in the Deadwood area.
If you are planning a trip to Deadwood make sure you look up Deadwood Dicks on the internet & plan on staying there.

Arriving at Deadwood Dick's was like coming home after being gone for years. The rooms were very comfortable and clean. I enjoyed not having any annoying telephones. Loved the elevator, even when it did'nt show up. I felt like I was in the old west, coming in off the dusty trail, having a cold drink before heading upstairs to bathe and relax. Mary and Dave were great! As much as we enjoyed our first trip to the Sturgis rally, Deadwood Dick's was the highlight of our trip.
