“Nice, comfy hotel rooms but loud air con”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 21, 2011

Being a fan of the 'deadwood' show I was excited about staying in this hotel. Unfortunately by the time I got to Deadwood I was becoming quite sick, I didn't get to see a lot of the town but I did get to spend a lot of time in my hotel room, mostly the bed. At no point did I get fed up of being bedridden so therefor it must have been a very comfy bed.

My only issue with the room was the air conditioning unit, even when the fan was turned off it made a fairly loud noise. If you sleep like a log no problem but if you are a fussy sleeper like myself then it could be an issue.

Booked two rooms several months in advance by calling the hotel directly. The gal who answered the phone was pleasant. Requested non-smoking rooms. Was told the new owner is planning to make all but five rooms smoking rooms, so by the time we arrived in Deadwood, the rooms we were given would be repainted, totally cleaned, and renewed as non-smoklng rooms. This was #308 and #312. When we arrived, we were given our keys and made our way to the third floor without bell service (no big deal). 308 is right off the elevator, when we opened the door the rush of stale cigarette smoke hit us like a punch in the face. Contrary to what a previous reviewer reports, there were several glass ashtrays inside the room. 312 smelled less smoky, but it could still be detected even by the least sensitive individual. Carpets were in rough shape, but the beds were good except for the stale smoke odor in the bedding. Bathrooms were decent, water pressure good. 308 had an issue with toilet plugging up even with non-solids being flushed away. A plunger was sent up right away by room service. Kept it around in case, but didn't need it again.
Desk staff were very nice to work with, although they all had multiple jobs to do and sometimes we had to wait. They were attentive though. Actually felt bad for them having to attend to multiple customers all needing something at once.
Soda machines on a 2nd floor hallway were all out of order.
Ice had to be given to you by showing up at the front desk with your ice bucket for the desk person to fill for you. Sort of a pain, but real estate in this hotel is at a premium.
This hotel is certainly historic and very beautiful! The casino area was laid out very well, plenty of room to wander and check out the extremely tight slot machines. The bar that was once called Seth's (something) was still closed, and no one knew if it would ever be reopened. Bully's, the restaurant/bar on the main floor off the casino is a gorgeous room with a huge fireplace. You do feel like you stepped back in time and wondered how it was to be there back in the old days. The restaurant consisted of a small grill and fridge behind the bar where a single cook slinged breakfast and lunch. No dinner is served at the Bullock Hotel. Imagine that. An employee said the new management is considering doing away with breakfast and lunch as well! If you do play the slots, you'll be offered free drinks, which is one benefit, but most of the casinos in Deadwood offer this as well. No ghosts seen, heard, or sensed throughout the week we stayed at the Bullock. Overall, all I can report is our stay was just....okay. Sad to say, because we really did have high hopes for our vacation at the Bullock Hotel. Our next trip out, unless things change for the better, we'll book elsewhere.

Room Tip: Some rooms are connecting, some are not. This is an old old building, and floors aren't always l...

We had tried to get a room at Casino Jacks at the edge of town, but they were full up so we tried the Bullock Hotel. What a lucky turn of events! Our room at the Bullock Hotel was best place we stayed during our 3,000 mile road trip. Vicki at the front desk was terrific. She offered us a special deal on her favorite "haunted" room. We didn't encounter the ghost, but did enjoy the comfortable beds, the antique furniture and the big bathroom. The Bullock is a special place right in the heart of downtown within walking distance to all the sights.

Room Tip: We stayed in Rm 211

chose this hotel because it had smoking rooms, but when we inquired at the service desk for an ashtray, we were told all rooms are now non-smoking,and the website had not been updated to reflect this. we were naturally upset, because this is the reason we chose to stay at this hotel and we had been there for a few hours already without knowing this. nothing was mentioned at check-in.
the room itself was nice-with a separate vanity area in the room, which we appreciated. you do have to go downstairs to the reception desk for ice, however, and the drinks and food were not good. the location was very good -right on main st.
all in all, i would not stay there again at this hotel.

Stayed at the Bullock Hotel recently for my birthday. Unfortunately, not the least bit scary, but service was attentive. Rooms are adequate. Great location on Main Street!
Accommodations were adequate. Parking across the street at the back of the building.

Room Tip: I would rent a corner suite if available. Other rooms are average. Some, like 210 and 208 have bad...

We visited Deadwood on our last night of a week-long vacation this past Tuesday night. Check in was easy and our room was ready for us when we arrived. Parking is in the back of the building, not on Main Street, there is a lot that appeared to be shared with the Celebrity Hotel next door, and they give you a pass to hang on your rear-view mirror so that you can park there for free. Our room was 203, nice corner room facing Main Street with 2 queen beds. We opted for that over 1 King because of the Main St. view. Our room had a bit of light all night because of this, although it was quiet and we did not hear noise from the street. But, upon saying this, it was a very quiet night that night. If you have any concerns about staying in this "haunted" hotel, this is the room for you because it does not get pitch dark in there! We had no ghostly experiences here, and we were very comfortable and slept well. The room was clean and nice and we loved the Victorian feel of the place. You can hear other rooms' showers through the vents in the morning though, although this really did not bother us. We didn't eat here, but they do offer breakfast and lunch, but are closed for dinner. We had dinner at Miner's Den Steakhouse which is a short walk up Main Street. We loved, it, one of the best steaks that I have ever had, and my husband loved his prime rib too. Before that we visited Moriah's Cemetary to visit the graves of Seth Bullock, sheriff of Deadwood back in the day and owner of Bullock Hotel, Wild Bill Hickok and Calamity Jane. There were many, many other gravesites there and we did walk around some before we went to dinner. We ended up back at the Bullock and played some slots, but they weren't winning that night! They do offer free well drinks, beer, and wine if you are gambling, and our waitress, Sabrina, was very nice and showed up often to make sure we were taken care of. She was a pleasure and made us feel welcome. I would not hesitate to stay at the Bullock hotel again, and Deadwood is definately worth seeing if you are in the area! Also, Deadwood was a good last night stop for us as it took only 45 minutes to get to Rapid City to catch our flight home. We LOVED South Dakota!

Room Tip: We enjoyed facing Main Street but I'm sure that other rooms are lovely in the back of the hotel...

They had a little trouble with our reservation, but sorted it out satisfactorily. The rooms were spacious and comfortable. The restaurant staff were a bit overwhelmed. But I would stay there, again, if I had the occasion.

Room Tip: Second floor front corner room is very nice.
