This hotel is not located in downtown Deadwood, but about five minutes outside of it, near Tatanka, the buffalo attraction. When my niece called to get directions (we were lost) the guy who she spoke to at the front desk wasn't very helpful and kind of rude. Not a good first impression, but as we stayed in South Dakota, I came to realize that people there are very to-the-point and blunt, which can be interpreted as rude. Check in is a 3. We arrived at 3:30, checked in and went up to our room to relax. The hotel has a very nice lobby, with lots of stone, leather and wood; it is masculine feeling and Western. There is a trolley that takes you into downtown Deadwood so that is convenient. The room was very nice, with two comfortable beds, a mini fridge and coffeemaker. They have two restaurants here. One is in a bar type setting (Oggie's Sports Bar) with big TVs. We had a glass of wine and artichoke dip here the first night. The other restaurant (Deadwood Grille), we had breakfast in. I got eggs, buffalo sausage and hash browns, which was good. The exercise room was adequate and they have TVs to watch while working out. The pool area is super cool, with fun stuff for kids. There is also a casino, if you're feeling lucky. There's coffee available in the lobby area. All in all, I really enjoyed The Lodge, a secluded hotel out of Deadwood, but within easy reach. It seemed more upscale and luxurious than most of the hotels available downtown.
