We happened upon Crazy Horse before Mt. Rushmore--not planned, but we decided to see it first anyway. We could see it from the side of the road, and if you don't wish to pay money or learn anything about it, then you could choose to do it that way.
But we drove in, paid the fee and took our 6, 7 & 8 year old into the museum, watched the film, and looked at all the Indian displays. The film is a must see--it brings you closer to the reason for the monument and to the man who sculpted it. It will take forever to complete because it is not gov't funded--our entrance fee goes to the creation of the monument and supports the museum.
It is tremendous and made Mt Rushmore look tiny in comparison. I do wonder how all this rock carving was ever allowed in the first place, but well, that's just my opinion (Mt Rushmore was created to draw visitors to SD). Personally I wouldn't "settle things" by building a "bigger monument than the other guys" but again, that's just me.
But it made me think about America before we were all born (at least before my family was born) and I suppose that's the reason it's there. Our kids got to see Indian artifacts up close, something they hadn't really done before, and it's part of South Dakota history, the purpose of our trip. It's still on my mind and I would like to return with my grandkids in 30 years to see the progression. It is a work of art, just like Rushmore, created by the hand of man.
